September 04, 2008
For the first time in the history of Wolves Racing, the drag racing
team will not be going to Mission Raceway Park on a scheduled track day
(September 5th). Administration felt that taking students to the track
on the first week of school would not a good idea. Because we are in
the
lead with the most points in the junior dragster division, we were a
little concerned about losing the title this season. However, our
competitors from Mouat agreed not to make an issue of the awarding of
points (what good sportsmanship). Our next track date will be the 26th
of September. Hopefully, the day will be dry and we can finish the
season up on a high note.
June 27, 2008
School's out for summer, but our team was out at the track doing what
we do best. Sit and bake in the sun, while taking in the smell of VHT
and burnt rubber. Today was the last race for our two grade eight
drivers, so it was decided by the majority of the other drivers and pit
crew that they could automatically drive our two fastest cars, "Jessie"
and "Molly", in the elimination rounds. As with all races, the driver
with the fastest reaction time got their choice of car. Graeme had the
fastest R/T, so he drove "Molly", while Rick drove "Jessie". As for the
rest of our drivers, they all got to drive at least twice today. Not
bad considering the number of drivers we had at the track today.
In the elimination rounds, Graeme M. in Molly, went up against Devin D.
from Mouat. Devin was eliminated due to a close red light, allowing
Graeme to go on to the next round. In the other pairing, Rick C.
driving "Jessie", went up against Rae-Anne M. in "Chilli". Rick C. eked
out a win and went on to face Graeme in the final round. Two
grade 8 students on their last day at the track under our school's
banner, going head to head for first place - couldn't have written a
better script! There were no losers in this one, as both drivers did a
fantastic job. Both boys will be sorely missed on our team, as they
were an inspiration to the younger drivers. Both of them took the time
to show the younger team members "the ropes". They join a list of great
drivers that have gone through our drag race programme. Former students
like Samantha Pain, Dan Chalmers, Levi Tremblay, and Kyle McCarthy.
In the final elimination round, the drivers got to choose their own
dial in times. It certainly takes the pressure off of us adults, that's
for sure. If you look at the results of that last elimination round,
their dial in times were pretty darn close.
With the final two race dates of the season being in September, the
dragsters will now be stored for two months As of now, our school is
ahead in team points. For more info on how our drivers and cars are
doing so far this season, please visit the BCSSMA (British
Columbia Secondary School Motorsports Association) web site.

June 13, 2008
After four weeks of no racing, our students were itching to
drive. A light drizzle in the morning and forecast of possible rain in
the afternoon had most of us worried, but as it turned out, it stayed
dry with the sun breaking through in late afternoon. For the first time
this
season, we took along all three dragsters. Our friends from Mouat had
their new junior dragster fixed and ready to run. To our surprise,
their dragster ran in the high 9's. Well, at least it was a surprise to
us. We were led to believe their car was to run in the 12's. In
any case, Molly, our flagship car, performed well again. We ran
into some problems with the roller chain stretching, but after a quick
removal of a few links, we were ready for the elimination rounds. In
the first round of eliminations, we had Chilli go up against Jessie,
while Molly went
up against Mouat's dragster. Jessie, our sponsor's car was eliminated
and Chilli went onto the next round. In the other pairing, Mouat's
dragster got eliminated by Molly, which led to the final pairings where
Molly went up against Chili. Chili, driven by Ben P. went on to win
first place. Congratulations, Ben - nice trophy, BTW.
Mr. Glum and the MMH class joined us at the track today. We fired up
the BBQ and had burgers and smokies. It's always great when the MMH
class comes out to MRP to cheer us on. Food always tastes great with
good company. Thanks, Mr. Glum for getting the BBQ up and running!

May 16, 2008
It has been quite some time since we updated this web page.
Weather has been terrible this season. Our first two race dates for the
season, April 4th and 18th, were rained out. The weather on May
2nd, our third race date, was also predicted to be bad. So certain was
the bad weather that the
BCSSMA executive canceled racing the day before. Despite the
cancelation, we decide to take our chances and headed out to Mission
Raceway Park. The race gods kept the dark clouds in check and we had a
full day of racing without a drop of rain. It started to rain as soon
as we got back to school
at the end of the day. Thank you, race gods. Results from that day to
be
posted later when we find them....... ooops.
Today, May 16th, the weather reports called for sunny skies with
temperatures in the
Valley to hit well over the 30 degrees Celsius mark. Sure enough, it
was sunny
and hot, hot, hot! The track was pretty full today with all kinds of
test
and tune cars along with a full compliment of high school cars and even
a few juniors. Today, we faced off against Mouat Secondary's new junior
as well as a junior that represented A. D. Rundle Middle School of
Chilliwack.
We had a great day at the track. "Molly", our black dragster with the
newly purchased JR Racing, stage 5 motor and new Shockwave clutch, did
very, very
well. On one of the runs, it ran through the 1/8 mile in 8.702 seconds
with a trap speed of 73.72 miles per hour! Two weeks ago, the dragster
went a surprising 8.98 seconds in the eighth. We were told by JR
Racing,
the place where we purchased our refurbished motor from, that the motor
would take our car with its combined weight of vehicle and driver into
the mid 9's. Well, it's always a big bonus when the car goes half a
second faster than it's supposed to. On that day, our last run resulted
in the sprocket hub breaking off from the axle. It actually split open
and
warped to the point it spun and caused all kinds of damage to the axle
and sprocket. It was a case of too much power for an old and tired
vehicle. We
immediately ordered a new axle, an upgraded heavy duty hub, and a new
set of
sprockets. This, of course, led to the improved times we saw today. Too
good are the times, in fact, that we will have to investigate to see if
the gear ratio is wrong for the motor. If so, we may have to change the
gear ratio and slow the car
down to ensure the motor is not being overworked. After all, we are a
public school with little funding. Longevity of the equipment is so
important. You break stuff when you go too fast.
So far this year, we have had five new drivers trained. All have done
very well on their first runs at the track. A very promising group of
drivers, indeed. At this time, we would like to take the opportunity to
thank all the parents who come out and support the team. Mr. McCarthy,
our mechanic, Mr. Wilson for building us the tow dolly and getting us a
second support vehicle, Mr. Cartwright, who comes out each time to help
set up at the track, Grandpa Dugdale, our counselor, who's there each
time to help stage the cars. It's always the people behind the scenes
who make a difference. We get compliments at the track for how
organized we are and how professional looking we are and it's all
because of the help these guys give. Everything from loading and
unloading equipment, and fixing up the cars, to helping out at
practices in the school's parking lot. To Rad Torque Systems / New
World Technologies, our main sponsors, thanks for all the help you have
provided us. It's
amazing how much work and sweat goes into the end result which,
ironically, lasts for only a few short seconds.
Our next track date is June 13th. Hopefully, we will have our third
dragster, Chilli, up and running by then.
May 16, 2008 Race Results.
At 11:25, Jessie, our sponsor's car, lined up with Mouat's brand
new dragster.
At 2:03, Molly, our dragster with the new motor went up against Mouat.
At 2:06, Jessie went up against the dragster from R. D. Rundle.
At 10:59, Molly broke the all time CDGMS record with a pass of 8.702
seconds in the eighth mile with a trap speed of 73.72 Miles Per Hour.
In all fairness, the Mouat car had clutch problems today and was not
running right. In three weeks time, it'll all be fixed and we will look
forward to a rematch.
R. D. Rundle Middle School had problems on their inaugural run and were
finished for the day. We hope to see them again in three weeks.
Please note that on some runs, the cars were not paired up. Alternating
colours are used in the table below to make it easier to keep track of
pairings.

February 18, 2008
Our PAC (Parent Advisory Council) approved the spending of funds to
purchase a motor and clutch for one of our dragsters. We are looking
forward to working on the dragsters and breaking our speed records from
previous seasons. By April 4th, our first race date, we are hoping to
field three junior dragsters.
New 2008 race schedule is up on our web
site.
2007
Racing Season Updates
September 30, 2007 (September
28th race day)
The last event of the season and it looked like the weather was not
going to cooperate. Forecast called for rain all day long. The BCSSMA
executive were so convinced of the forecast that they canceled the
event. Mission Raceway Park was still open, so we went as usual. The
morning was cold and miserable, but dry. Dark clouds gathered overhead
and it looked really bad at times. However, the skies did clear up
after a few drips and toward the end of the day, it was bright and
sunny. The track surface wasn't in the greatest of condition, but we
did get a few runs in. Although there were less cars at Mission than
usual, we didn't get as many runs as we normally would due to numerous
break downs, a late start, and a large number of drivers licensing. We
usually get to Mission at around 10 am, but this time, we were early by
almost an hour. We were itching to run, but didn't get started till
after 11 am! We usually call it quits at around 3:30, but we stayed a
little longer to get in our 6th run. No complaints, though. It could
have rained on the last event of the season.
We took along two dragsters this time around. Chili could not be
resurrected in time. The brake problem Molly experienced last race day
was due to the brake bleeders coming loose on their own. Something we
thought we had fixed, but on run three, they came loose again which
almost caused a problem at the turn off lane. All three dragsters will
be thoroughly checked over in the off season and they will be back
faster and better than ever in April. Rumour has it that we will have
some tough competition next season as Robert Bateman Secondary is
looking to get
into junior dragsters. Mouat Secondary has shown some interest in
juniors, as
well.
Congratulations to our two new drivers, Rae Anne M. and Graeme M. First
time driving down the track and they did an outstanding job. Having to
wait for over a year to be able to drive is tough at times, but it paid
off. Great runs, guys. The team is very proud of you.

September 17, 2007 (September
14th race day)
We finally did it! One of our dragsters finally got into the
9's. We took two dragsters to the track on Friday, but only ran one.
Molly's brakes were not working well, so it was decided that we stay
safe
and not run it at all. We got 9 runs in and overall it was a very
successful day. One of the other highlights of the day was watching Mr.
Lilly, our mild-mannered librarian, drive our sponsor's 7 second
dragster down the track. Because it was Mr. Lilly's first time ever on
the track, he
had to go through a certification process. His first three runs had to
be slower than 10 seconds in the 1/4 mile. It was unbelievable to see
him do a perfect burnout on his first attempt. Mr. Lilly got two runs
in and will have to do one more before he is allowed to do a few medium
speed runs. After that, he will be able to go full tilt. Mr. Lilly was
so excited after the two successful runs that it was hard to tell if
the wrinkles on his face were from being so happy or if they were from
pulling over 3 G's at the starting line. For those of you who have not
been in a dragster capable of going well over 200 miles an hour, the
inertia is unbelievable. Another highlight of the day was watching our
good friend Leo (one of the employees and head mechanic of our sponsor)
recorded a personal best ET in his amazingly fast dragster. Can you
believe it? 5.7 seconds in the quarter mile. Enough to make your head
spin for quite some time. Both of his runs on Friday were in the 5
second range. Needless to say, the track was in excellent shape. Our
next race date is September 28th. We are hoping to have all three of
our dragsters operational by then. Our friends from Mouat did very well
and won first place in the high school division. A couple of our former
racers are now on Team Mouat.
Time Slips
You will notice by the reaction times in the second and third runs that
we had a difficult time staging the dragster. Since we were the only
junior dragster team at the race track we decided to change lanes. Sure
enough, moving over to the right lane solved the problem. For next race
day we will make adjustments to ensure the dragster interupts the laser
beams properly.

June 29, 2007
The best way to deal with misfortune is to get back up and come back
better and stronger than ever. As of one week ago, our race program
came to, what seemed to be, an abrupt end. With no funds left, we had
zero cars that were in any running shape for the final race date of the
school year at Mission Raceway Park. A die hard racer at the track in
Ashcroft came up to us after seeing the blown motor on "Jessie" and
said something to us that gave us great inspiration. He said,
"Something good will come out of this. It always does." He was right.
One of our parents at the school, Mr. McGuire, generously donated
enough money to the team so we could get back up and running -
unbelievable, and at the time we most need it. On top of this, the
competitor we faced during the second round of eliminations at Ashcroft
happened to have a spare motor that was in great shape. We jumped all
over it (and through about a thousand hoops - red tape) and by the
night before the races, we got 'er done. The motor we acquired was a
9.8 second motor that came with a Shockwave clutch. For those who have
no idea what that is, let's just say it is a way better clutch than
anything we have ever had in any of our cars. When the car and trailer
showed up at school Friday morning, we just couldn't wait. We pulled
her off the trailer and took her for a spin in the school's parking
lot. The students couldn't believe how well the clutch engaged. We were
even able to spin the tires on dry pavement. Oops, we kind of took the
paint off the basketball court (hopefully the principal won't find out,
lol).
The weatherman had been calling for rain and sure enough there were
plenty of black clouds in the sky. We were determined to let our grade
eights, who would be leaving our school, get one last kick at the can.
Two of them were not at Ashcroft, so they were praying that things
would go well for the last racing event of the school year. Today was
not a school day for our team as the last day of school was yeasterday.
The students knew that only the grade eights would be allowed to race,
yet most of the team came out to help and watch the grade eights drive
for the last time. The sponsor teachers were very impressed by this -
we must be doing something right.
Did all our hard work and effort pay off? Oh yeah, says the grade
eights. How good is the new clutch? How about a 0.002 second reaction
time by Robert? That is about as close as it gets to perfection. He
nailed it! He won a trophy for best reaction time in the high school
division. Not a bad way to end his driving days with Wolves Racing. The
new clutch is pretty responsive
and allows us to do some nasty burnouts. Before this, we would be too
embarrassed to
even try a burn out. Now we can do 15 foot burnouts. Wow, something
good did come out of this...........

The first two runs, with Kevin behind the wheel, were with a 14 tooth
gear on the clutch side. The
person who we had bought the motor from told us that it didn't sound
like the motor was revving high enough on the two runs he saw and
heard. He
suggested we use an 11 tooth gear, which he happened to have with him.
After the two runs Kevin made, the car came into the pit area where the
pit crew
changed the oil and adjusted the gas and brake pedals to fit the taller
drivers. At that time, Mr. McCarthy promptly exchanged the 14 tooth
gear for the 11 tooth and this definitely improved our ET and MPH. The
chart doesn't
reflect this
as much, but one has to remember that Kyle and Robert are much taller
and heavier than Kevin -
somewhere in the neighbourhood of 50 or so pounds of difference. With
Kevin in the car, we should easily be in the 9's and be going 63 to 65
miles per hour. In fact, Kevin was in the car suited up and at the
staging lanes for our seventh run when it started to pour. Our hopes of
getting a car into
the 9's will just have to wait.
June 28, 2007
Our little trip to Eagle Motorplex in Ashcroft was quite
interesting. We've been trying to go to Ashcroft for nearly five years.
It finally came together for us and it was one trip most of us will not
forget any time soon. Going to a different track and seeing so many
junior dragsters at the event was a real treat. There were, by our
estimate, close to twenty "junior diggers" there, but only sixteen or
so were racing. On Saturday, our cars ran well with Jessie making it
past the first round of eliminations. During the second round of
eliminations, "Jessie", driven by Robert, had a terrible start. It was
sputtering and cutting out as if the motor was running out of fuel. We
were facing a faster car at the time, so we got the green light first.
Because of the poor start, we "rattled" the competitor and the driver
did not have a great run. We were told, right after the race, by the
other team that we had won the race and that we would move on to the
next round. The other team knows how consistent our cars are, so it was
assumed that we had won. As it turned out, our ET (Elapsed Time) was
way off our
dial-in time - much worse than our competitor. Once we got "Jessie"
back, we started to look for the problem. We later found out that the
wire to the shut off switch on the steering wheel was grounding out.
What a way to lose in the elimination rounds. On Sunday, we switched
drivers and were looking forward to another great day of racing. It
sprinkled a bit in the morning, but the rain drops basically dried up
as soon as it hit the track. Everybody was excited. "Jessie", our
fastest car was going to be driven by our lightest driver, Rick, so we
were excited about getting faster times - perhaps into the 9's? It all
came to an abrupt end when we blew both motors. The engine block on
Jessie's motor had a huge hole in it. We were done for the rest of the
day and most likely, the rest of the season. "Moly", our other car was
also not running well and it had to be
brought back limping. Overall, we had a great two (three days for some
of us) days of racing and camping in Ashcroft/Cache Creek. Most of us
stayed in the same campgrounds and the best part of this trip was the
"getting to know each other." It was a great experience for the parents
to see what sort of things the students do at the track.

Predicting weather in Southwest BC is always a challenge. You
can check with three different sources and each one will have a
different take on what will happen the next day. Because the forecast
from two of the three sources called for chances of showers on Friday,
the BCSSMA Drag Races for Friday were called off. MRP, however, did not
cancel the Test and Tune for Friday, so we decided to go to MRP anyway
and take our chances. If our gamble paid off, we would get plenty of
runs in. As it turned out, weather was incredibly good on Friday with
sunny skies for most of the day. Our luck, however, basically ended
with the weather cooperating. By the end of the day, two of our
dragsters bit the dust. Chili experienced all kinds of carburetor
problems. We ran her twice and decided to shut her down when the
throttle cable got stuck at the end of the second run - a potentially
hazardous condition. Once we got the throttle cable repaired, we
noticed that the motor was overheating meaning it was running extremely
lean. Rather than risk permanent damage by trying to adjust the
carburetor, we called it a day for poor Chili. Chili started having the
carburetor problems the last time we were at the track. We were
planning on converting Chili's Tillitson carburetor to a 28 mm Mikuni
Flatside so all of our cars would have the same type of carburetor. The
parts we needed for the conversion never arrived in time.
As for the amount of runs we got in on Friday, we couldn't complain one
bit. It was one of those get back to the staging lanes and go again
right away kind of day. Because of prior commitments, we had to leave
the track a couple of hours earlier than usual, but we did get a decent
amount of runs in. We even had a cheering section at the track this
time around, as the special needs students from our school attended the
event. It was a great day for them as they got to go around the pit
area to see all the highly modified cars and drag bikes that were at
the test and tune. Toward the end of the day, Moly ran into some
problems. It was a little eerie watching a junior dragster going down
the track slower than a toddler riding a tricycle. The drive shaft was
spinning at the chain sprocket. Either the key wore out or it came
loose. The dragster was just struggling to get to the end of the 1/8
mile. One of the givens in drag racing is that things break all the
time. We have been so fortunate with this aspect in the past. Well, the
law of averages finally caught up with us. The good news is, our main
sponsor, Rad Torque Systems, has the facilities and know how to fix
most, if not all, of our problems. Which brings me to one of the
success stories of the day. Our sponsor, Mr. Dan Provost of Rad Torque
Systems, is a drag racer himself. He recently purchased a new full
sized dragster (rail car). Friday was the first time he was going to be
in it. He set his goals for 7 second runs. The track was not ideal as
the temperatures were pretty low, but by the end of the day, he got
into the low 7's (7.12) at 190 plus MPH. The car could have gone
faster, but it was losing traction from start to finish. If conditions
were right, he would have easily been in the 6's. It was simply amazing
to see something that fast go down the track from the vantage point we
had - the staging lanes.
Next up for us is a two day event at Ashcroft. For three years we have
been trying to go up to Eagle Motorplex Park in Ashcroft to race.
Unlike MRP, where we might compete with two or three junior dragsters,
we will be facing a dozen or more competitors. The students will be
going up on Friday afternoon and camp overnight. We will be at Ashcroft
with Mr. Johnson and Team Mouat of Mouat Secondary, the school where
most of our grade eight students will go to next year. Because of the
traveling restrictions we are faced with, we will only be taking six of
our team members. Three of them are drivers, so they will be assigned a
car each and go head to head with other junior dragsters from schools
in the Interior. We are looking forward to seeing our friends from
Merritt again, who we met once or twice at MRP over the years. As soon
as we get back from Ashcroft, we will race at MRP again on the last day
of school. Plans for attending the events during the summer months are
still being discussed, but the season will come to a close with two
events left in September.

May 18, 2007
Wow, did we ever have one heck of a day! The forecast for the
last week and a half called for this day to be cursed, wet and
miserable. As it turned out, the weather couldn't have been any better.
On top of this, not many cars showed up at the track, which meant
opportunity for more runs. Two of our cars got in ten runs each, while
the third, which experienced mechanical problems early on, got in eight
runs. Congratulations, Rick C. for a great debut as a driver. We are so
proud of you for ridding your demons and training so hard. Rick's
reaction times were great for a first timer and driving 'Moly' to its
fastest speed ever was a definite bonus. Because Kevin Y's partner,
Kyle was not able to be at the track this week, Kevin got to drive
'Jessie' all day long. Getting to go over 60 miles an hour in the
eighth mile all day long, while sitting two inches off the ground
- priceless.
Our next race date is three weeks away. This will give us some time to
clean up the "garage" and make it like our second home. The "garage",
which is the chain link fenced area right outside the tech ed shop,
used to be the dumping grounds of the school. After years of eyeing the
area, we finally moved all the items out of there and took over. We
have turned it into quite the facility. With cupboards and shelving
units, we have all the tools and equipment organized and safely locked
away. On race days, we will be able to just grab the items we need and
be on our way. Once the "garage" is finished, we will post pics of our
hard work. Even now, the area looks so professional. Tie down hooks and
straps hanging neatly on the wall, safety gear locked up in luggage
cases, tools in portable rolling carts and chests, etc. We are also in
the midst of drafting up a list of duties and responsibilities for each
member - trainer of trainers model. Organization is the key to success.

May 12, 2007
Our drag racing team went to Mission Raceway Park on May 4th only to
have the event cancelled. The day looked somewhat promising early in
the morning, but the weather did not improve as forecasted. As soon as
the track dried up, it started to rain again. This cycle continued for
three and a half hours. The students did a sundance, but to no avail.
With over half of the day spent waiting for the weather to get better,
the track officials called it off. Hopefully, our next track date, this
coming Friday, May 18th will be dry. Last year, only one track date got
cancelled due to poor weather. Two years ago, every track date except
one was rained out. Word has it that if the Mighty Fraser keeps rising
as predicted, we won't be racing at MRP for a long time. Plan B would
be to try and make it over to Eagle Motorplex in Ashcroft for a few
events late in June and in the summer.
April 21, 2007
It is hard to believe that we have not mentioned this on the web
site before, but we acquired the use of a third junior dragster. Our
sponsor and good friends over at Rad Torque Systems purchased a junior
dragster and has given us full use of it for the season. The new
dragster is very nice and is a step above our other two. For the last
month or so we have worked on all three dragsters to get them ready for
the race season. The first scheduled event on March 30th was cancelled
due to poor track conditions. Good thing, too, as the cars were not
ready. Although the weather was not ideal, the team headed over to
Mission Raceway Park to give our 6 new team members a better idea of
what to expect when we do get a chance to race at the track. Getting to
walk down the track and see how the equipment worked was very useful.
The students worked very hard this past week as the needed parts to get
the new dragster up to NHRA standards arrived three days before the
next track date, which was yesterday, April 20th. After upgrading the
brake rotors, fixing the steering, adding a manual shut off switch,
fixing the electrical switches, fixing a broken chain guard, adding a
new carburetor, we barely had enough time Thursday after school to run
the dragster up and down our parking lot a few times to get used to the
new dragster - definitely faster.
The weather cooperated yesterday as there were no clouds overhead at
all. We didn't leave the school as early as we usually do as hauling
three dragsters and a golf cart on one trailer wasn't as easy as we
thought. Our trailer from last year is no longer big enough to haul
everything. Once again, our sponsors at Rad Torque Systems came through
for us by letting us use their trailer for the day. It took a while to
figure out how best to transport everything securely, so when we did
arive at MPR, the line ups were long. The day went very well for two of
our dragsters, but our original dragster, 'Moly' ran into a bit of a
problem. At the staging lanes, we heard a very weird clanging sound.
Upon closer inspection, we discovered tiny bits of metal raining out
from under the chain guard. It turned out that one of the bolts on the
crankcase cover had worked its way loose and was hitting up against the
flywheel. Mr. McCarthy and the pit crew quickly took the chain guard
off and tightened up the bolt and three others that were also working
its way loose. 'Moly' was ready in time for the second round.
'Chili', the dragster we bought two years ago from Chilliwack
Secondary,
ran somewhat consistently and had no problems. 'Jessie', our newest
dragster was not as consistent, but did well considering we had just
added a new carb one day before with little or no opportunity for
proper adjustment.
Our drivers did very well on Friday. We red-lighted only once, and this
was due to the driver being in a car they had never driven in before.
Again, we were proud of the fact that our students' reaction times were
better than most of the high school students'. Junior dragsters, by
nature, are difficult to stage. Our pit crew also did an admirable job
considering it was the first time out for some of them. We still need
to iron out some issues when it comes to loading and unloading
equipment, but those are the kinds of things we can work on. For the
next little while, we will be working on preparing the new members of
this year's team to become drivers.
Here are the results of the six or so runs we got in on Friday. Note:
Moly is our original dragster, Chili is our second dragster and Jessie
is our new dragster.

Lordco has become our latest sponsor and has donated funds that
will be
used for supplies such as the synthetic oil we will be using this
season. Thank you Lordco for their continued support not only for us,
but for the whole racing programme at Mission Raceway Park.
Thanks to a donation from Rapid Tire Repair we have ordered and will
soon receive a new set of tires for our dragster. Rad Torque
Systems, our major sponsor, will be working on our two dragsters over
the next few months. They will ensure the dragsters are up-to-date and
follow all NHRA requirements. The amount of support they offer us in
the way of funds and expertise is incredible. Great partnerships. As a
team, we will endeavour to stay on top of our division.

Wolf Racing would like to welcome our newest sponsor, Rapid Tire
Repair. They have generously donated funds for us to purchase much
needed tires and wheels. The rear wheels of our first dragster were
worn down to just above the steel belts and needed replacing
immediately. We will also be upgrading the front tires to much lighter
ones that all our competitors already use. The students were very
excited that they were given the opportunity to pick their favorite
wheel design. Thanks also goes out to Mrs. Webber who arranged our new
partnership with Rapid Tire Repair.
Rapid Tire Repair is based out of Surrey and specializes in mobile tire
repair on industrial vehicles. Rapid Tire Repair can be reached at
604-302-6278.
As with all of our sponsors, we encourage everybody to support the
businesses that support us. Again, welcome Rapid Tire Repair - a proud
partner of a winning team.

The students and teachers of Wolf Racing would like to proudly announce
our latest sponsor, New World Technologies, makers of the RAD Torque
System. Owner and President, Dan Provost, is himself an NHRA drag
racer. His full size dragster, which runs in the Top Comp category, is
an amazing piece of machinery. At our last track event, we had the
opportunity to sit in the RAD dragster. A 1150+ HP monster that dials
in at 7.3 seconds in the quarter mile. Unbelievable is all one can say.
Mr. Provost has agreed to have his race team/pit crew look after our
cars and get them in top working condition for next season. Because of
his personal involvement in the racing scene, Mr. Provost is fully
aware of the challenges involved and we are truly fortunate to find
such a perfect sponsor to form a partnership with. Not only that, Mr.
Provost is a local resident and has a child enrolled in our school. As
with all of our sponsors, we encourage you to support them. Their
website can be found at: http://www.radtorque.com/index.html
At present, the students from our own race team are working on taking
the dragsters apart so that we can have the RAD Torque Systems Race
Team work on them over the winter. Competition for next year will
definitely get tougher and with the added support from our new sponsor,
we have full confidence in remaining undefeated in the secondary school
junior dragster division.

we are truly fortunate to find such a perfect sponsor to form a
partnership with. Not only that, Mr. Provost is a local resident and
has a child enrolled in our school. As with all of our sponsors, we
encourage you to support them. Their website can be found at: http://www.radtorque.com/index.html
At present, the students from our
own race team are working on taking the dragsters apart so that we can
have the RAD Torque Systems Race Team work on them over the winter.
Competition for next year will definitely get tougher and with the
added support from our new sponsor, we have full confidence in
remaining undefeated in the secondary school junior dragster division.
October 1, 2006
Another highly successful season at Mission Raceway Park has come to an
end. We are officially BCSSMA junior dragster class champions for the
2006 race season. We are also undefeated in the two full seasons that
we have competed at MRP. Our plans for the next few months is to take
the two junior dragsters completely apart and work on them in
preparation for next season which will begin again in early to mid
April. In early March, when the weather warms up, we will start
recruiting for new members and start practices out in our school
parking lot. We are looking for drivers as well as pit crew members.
Spots are limited and we will have a selection process in place. We are
looking for individuals who are committed - students who are not
involved in other after school activities and can make it to all
practices and events. In the past, we have had to let go of some
members due to lack of commitment.
Hats go off to this year's team. If you have read all the previous
updates, you would see that teamwork in the pit area is very
important. Drivers really came through this season, as well. We had
very few red lights go on at the starting lanes and reaction times were
consistently quick.
What we will be doing over the next few months:
Get our original car's chrome moly chassis rewelded and reinforced (see
July 2nd update).
Repair the clutch and possibly the rear driven clutch
Repair oil leaks (replace crankcase gaskets and oil seal)
Flush fuel system of all alcohol on both dragsters
Replace all hoses and clamps on both dragsters
Repair / upgrade body fasteners on new dragster
Repair cracks and tears on the old dragster's fiberglass body
Replace broken windshield on old dragster
Replace drive chain on old dragster
Replace steering bolts on new dragster (worn down - too much play)
Update brake rotor to 3/4 inch to meet new NHRA rules
Replace all electrical connectors on both dragsters
Check brake components and bleed brakes on both dragsters
Install Digitron computer back on both dragsters (we're gonna get
serious with tuning next season)
As you can see, a lot of work goes on behind the scenes. The successful
runs at the track are the result of countless hours put in at the pit
area and
back at the "garage". Parts are not cheap and disappointments and
frustration are all part of the total learning experience the students
go through. When students join our team for the first time, skills like
tightening nuts and bolts are a challenge. By the end of the season,
they are able to change the oil in a very short time and remove and
replace (re and re) equipment under great time pressures. Drag racing
is hands on learning. Problem solving and creativity are critical.

Weather on race dates at MRP have been incredibly good this season.
Today, the forecast called for mainly sunny skies with cloudy periods.
At 8 am, fog blanketed the entire Lower Fraser Valley and it looked
like it was not going to lift at all. By 10:00 am, however, the fog
finally lifted and the track dried up immediately under clear sunny
skies. Our original dragster will not be running today. The plastic
splines inside the clutch were completely melted onto the moveable
face. It was assumed two weeks ago that the problems with the clutch
were due only to a worn belt (see September 15 update). The new belt
along with a pair of new jackshaft bearings arrived a few days ago.
After the install of the jackshaft bearings and the new belt, it became
painfully apparent that our clutch problems went deeper than just a
worn belt. With less than two days to go, we could not find a source
for the parts.
Overall, the day was very productive. We met up with one of our
potential sponsors and also made contact with a few people who could
help us with getting parts and tweaking the cars.

The weather cooperated today, even though the forecast called
for rain. This was the first time we had the opportunity to take both
dragsters to the track. As it has been the case for the last two or
three race dates, we were the only school out there with a junior
dragster. It became somewhat of a joke that we had to race ourselves
because of the lack of competition this season. In total, we ran 9
times between the two dragsters. We could have had up to 16, but
unfortunately, our old dragster had to be brought in to the pit area
due to mechanical problems. We worked on her for over an hour, but the
clutch belt had worn down to the point it started to bind inside the
pulleys causing the dragster to vibrate and seize up. To complicate
things further, the idle screw on the carburetor fell off during the
first run (from the heavy vibration). This made it nearly impossible to
stage the dragster properly. We are hoping to get the old dragster
working again by next race date, which is the 29th of September. The
good news for the day was that our new dragster ran very well. It was
consistently in the mid to low 12's and for the first time, we broke
the 50 miles an hour mark. On one run we nearly made it into the 11's.
As for other Wolf Racing news, Chief Dan George Middle School had its
open house last night. We made it a point to display our two dragsters
and racing paraphernalia in the MPR (Multi-Purpose Room). We advertised
for sponsors at the open house, as our usual sponsor, Husky, no longer
sponsors our team. As it turned out, it was an excellent idea to
display our dragsters that night as we were approached with some offers
of sponsorship. Sponsors, of course, will have their company logos
proudly displayed on our equipment. We plan on being at trade shows and
school events throughout the year, so if you or anyone else you know is
looking for an opportunity to support a school team, we welcome the
chance to form a corporate partnership. Our dragsters can also be made
available for both corporate and public events for advertising
purposes.
As a side note, our new dragster was purchased from Chilliwack
Secondary that had sponsorship with the local Lordco dealership. The
Lordco decal some of you saw at the open house and in our pictures on
the web site will be removed after the end of this racing season. We
are seeking local Lordco sponsorship as well.
Below is a list of items we use on a consistent basis at both the track
and at the practices we hold in our school parking lot.
Synthetic Oil (any brand and grades such as 5W/20, 5W/30, 5W/50,
10W/30, 10W/40 will do just fine)
Bottled Water (it gets very hot at the track)
Tires (hard to find sizes, but if you know of a wholesaler, it would
help)
Fuel (Pure Alcohol or Racing Blend Alcohol)
Portable Air Tank (5 or 10 gallon)
Compressor Tools (air inflator, wrench, impact gun, etc.)
Welding Services (both TIG and MIG - this is what we need the most at
this time)
Cash Donations (we need money for maintaining the dragsters and to pay
for substitute teachers and drag strip entry fees)
For more detailed info on any of the above items, please contact any of
the following people. Mr. Lilly, Mr. Sakai, Mr. McCarthy, or Mr. Klim.

Our new junior dragster took some getting used to, being a bit longer
than our first one. The clutch is definitely better and the
brake and
gas pedals are set up differently - in the middle. Anyhow, the numbers
posted below speak for
themselves. Kevin, our lightest driver posted some pretty good runs. We
didn't
have the Digitron hooked up, so adjusting the carburetor was a hit and
miss. As for the weather, it was fairly cold with overcast skies. It
was threatening to rain all day with the exception of the last hour
when it cleared up a bit to let the sun peek through. We took along
three drivers and two pit crew members. With 13 runs, we had a very
productive day at the track. There weren't too many sub 10 second cars
in the test and tune section, but we witnessed an accident at the track
today. One of the high school cars, a Dodge Duster, ran into the
concrete barriers due to mechanical (suspension) problems. The driver
escaped injury, but the car was pretty much a loss. It just goes to
prove that anything can go wrong and at any time. Thank goodness for
safety equipment.

A lot has happened with Wolf Racing since the last update. We
bought ourselves another junior dragster! This one is faster than our
first one by a fair margin. How fast? Well, we will find out on the
11th of August, our next track date. Here are some pics of the new
dragster along with the custom made trailer we put together for towing
two junior dragsters from the end of the track to the staging area. We
tested the dragster as the previous owner had not had it running for
almost a year. A few parts were needed, but we are ready for the track
come Friday.

a pic of the broken frame.

A day at the track never goes as planned. More so today than any other.
It looked like it was going to be another good day at the track. When
we arrived, there didn't seem to be that many cars at all. We set
up quickly, got the car teched, and signed everybody up. We were one of
the first cars to get onto the staging area. We were at the tree and
left on the green light with a very good reaction time. That's when it
all came crashing down. The dragster just stopped. It had only gone
about 50 feet. WT heck? The chain had come off the sprocket! Upon
closer inspection, we realized that the sprocket had shifted over by a
good inch and a half causing the chain to jump the teeth. No problem,
we will just loosen the hex key that holds the sprocket to the axle and
shift it back. After a few grunts and the help of Mr. Klim's (ex-BC
Lions football player) brute strength, we got the stuck hex screw off.
Once we got the sprocket lined up and the chain adjusted, we started to
push the dragster down the pit area. Something sounded very wrong.
There was a reason why the sprocket had shifted over by so much. The
frame that holds the motor to the dragster had broken. We're not
talking a little loose or hanging by a nose hair. It was completely
snapped in two on both rails!! Not good. Not good at all. This kind of
damage is catastrophic. Our day was done. The look on the students'
face said it all. A big disappointment, indeed. We were ready to pack
it in when one of the students' mother mentioned that her brother, who
happened to be at MRP with his drag bike, knew a person who may have a
TIG welder on hand. He wasn't at MRP yet, but was expected to show up
within the hour. A hope and a prayer was all we needed. Our pit crew
brought out the tools and we took the motor, the carb, the fuel pump,
seat, seat belts, shut off switches, and the fuel tank off the frame.
The team buzzed all around the dragster and we had everything off in
less than 20 minutes. It was just amazing - onlookers were awestruck by
the well orchestrated pit crew made up of a bunch of grade 6 and 7
students. After we had everything removed, we had to scrape off all the
paint from the areas that needed to be welded. Any dirt or grease would
result in a poor weld. Mr. Lilly got down and dirty and scraped and
sanded and filed and got her all prepped for the welder dude, who was
waiting in the wings to do his thing. After the welding was completed,
we quickly cooled the tubing down and started to put everything back
together again. By the time the last piece was put back on, we came to
realize that we hadn't missed that much racing at all. The starting
lights and time board were down and not working. We may have missed two
or three runs at the most.
The welds should hold up for whatever runs we had left for the day. We
were planning on two drivers, so if we got two runs in, we were going
to go home happy. As it turned out, we got in six runs. Wow, it turned
out to be a good day after all. We made the right decision by not
giving up. Hats off to the welder (never got his full name) who came to
our rescue. Students learned a valuable lesson today. That racers
really do stick together. This happens so often in the pit area.
Everybody relies on each other and nobody lets a fellow racer down.
And, of course, never, ever give up no matter how bad it looks or gets.
As for the six runs we got in today, the car ran ever so consistent.
The carb, which just got back from a major cleaning job and sporting
new jets, really made a big difference. The dragster ran within two
tenths of a second on all six runs. We are back into the low 13's
again. Time slips were not given out because of printing problems, but
the reaction times of both drivers were also very good. There were no
other junior dragsters at MRP today, but if they had shown up, we would
have been next to impossible to beat.
If, for some reason (like poor weather), this turns out to be the last
and final track date of the season, we would like to thank our good
friends over at Mouat Secondary. Our students, when they graduate, go
to Mouat Secondary and it's wonderful to know that there will be
something for our drag race team members to look forward to. Mr.
Johnson, who runs the racing programme there, is also one of the key
founding members of the BCSSMA (BC Secondary School Motorsport
Association). He has supported our team in so many ways over the years.
Always there with the answers.

Look at the crack in the tubing - not much left holding the motor onto
the rest of the dragster.

Today, things didn't look good at all. Weather reports indicated
rain and the clouds overhead confirmed the inevitable. Even Environment
Canada's, hourly weather report didn't look very promising. We've been
through many disappointments in the past, so this was nothing new for
us. As usual, we took a chance, loaded up, and left nice and early.
Well, for the first time ever, our gamble paid off. When we showed up
at MRP, very few high
school teams were present. In fact, not very many people were there at
all. It was perfect. The gloomy weather report kept many away. Another
contributing factor for the low turnout might have been the fact that
it is exam time for many of the local secondary schools. In any case,
we managed to get in eight runs! That's more than we got from the last
two times we attended High Schools Drags at MRP combined. Most of the
day was
mixed sun and cloud with a very small moment of sprinkles, which
delayed the races by only about ten minutes.
The students were treated to a great show at MRP, as usual. Some of the
fastest
top fuel pro mod cars were at the test and tune today. Talk about
ear-splitting, chest pounding rumble. I think the students are starting
to like the smell of VHT and burnt rubber. Watching 5 - 6 second cars
run down the track at over 160 MPH from the vantage point of the
staging area is priceless. The experience the students gain from being
at the track beats anything that would occur in a classroom. Hats off
to MRP and BCSSMA for making all this a possibility. Especially to the
track guys who let us watch from such a great vantage point.
As for competition today, there were only two other junior dragsters at
MRP. One was a privately owned jd that ran consistently at an insane
7.5 second ET and one that belonged to our friends from Merritt
Secondary.

As you can see from the time slips, our car was not running that well.
The slowest it has run all year, in fact. Cleaning the carburetor and
fuel pump has definitely improved the idle, but we now have to tune it
properly to improve ET and trap speed. If there is anybody in the
Abbotsford area that is well versed in Mikuni carbs and fuel pumps,
please call the school @ 604.852.9616. We have a 28mm Flat Slide Mikuni
carburetor with a Mikuni impulse pump. The good news is, we ran more
consistent than our competitors from Merritt. Consistent wins races and
not speed. We dialed in at 13.5 and our last run did the trick.

The day looked very promising in the beginning, but as we approached
noon, the clouds rolled in. After two runs, it started to sprinkle. The
sprinkles turned into rain and the track closed down at around 1:20 pm.
All in all it was a great day. The students got to see some amazing
drag bikes at MRP.
Our racing team has evolved over the years. No longer do we haul the
dragster in the bed of Mr. Lilly's truck with half of it sticking out
the back. No longer do we have to rely on others to tow our dragster
back to the starting line, either. Check out the new equipment we now
have. The trailer was an old abandoned trailer that we bought for 50
dollars. With a bit of paint and some plywood, we got her lookin'
pretty good. The Club Car (golf cart) in the picture is one we
bought just this past Thursday from our friends at McLean Golf. Thanks, John Dunn, for
putting
it all together for us. The club car runs like a charm and is perfect
for our needs. You ROCK!!!

The motor on our dragster is not doing so well right now. The
carburetor is spewing alcohol all over the place and the motor hardly
idles. It's pretty hard to stage properly and get good reaction times
when the motor does not cooperate. With the next track date being 4
weeks away (June 16), it may be time to overhaul the carburetor and
clean out the fuel pump.

sun dance routine down pat. We were so pumped and ready for a great day
of racing. This time around we were going to have the pit crew, who
didn't get to race
the last time, race. As usual, nothing goes as planned. The track shut
down for
an hour due to a starting tree malfunction. We got in a total of three
runs. A little disappointing for us teachers, but for the students, it
was three runs more than not being able to go at all. Sporting a new
master cylinder and a new mechanical shut off switch, a new NHRA
requirement for this year, our dragster ran consistently again. The
only variation in the numbers being due to the weight of the driver.
Hopefully, all will go well on the 19th of May, our next scheduled
track date.

April 8, 2006
Friday the 7th of April was our first day at the track for this
season. It didn't rain and we got 11 runs in. Our dragster had been
sitting mothballed for over 2 years and we didn't really have the car
prepped. Two weeks prior, we were crossing our fingers that the motor
would actually start. Alcohol sitting in the fuel lines for two years
can't be a good thing. When it did start, it ran poorly. As of
Thursday, the day before track date, we had the engine and clutch
completely apart. We had to replace the side cover gasket and seals due
to a bad oil leak. By Thursday afternoon we had everything back
together. We were all praying that the motor would not blow up because
things were not put back together properly. We tested the car in the
school parking lot a dozen or so times and it ran smoothly.
For the last week or so, our drivers were out in our school parking
lot practicing their starts and it paid off this Friday. One of our
four designated drivers recorded a reaction time of 0.007 seconds.
Pretty
impressive for a new driver on his first time out. He then followed it
with a 0.215 and a 0.077 reaction time. We only red lighted once --
that's when the students learned about the dangers of "deep" staging
the hard way. Of our 11 runs, only once did we have a reaction time of
over 1 second. Not bad for a bunch of grade 6, 7, and 8 students.
The pit crew, drivers, and sponsor teachers had a great time at the
track. Mr. Lilly had the BBQ going and we were able to watch the pro
cars do their thing at the test and tune. Our next track date is April
21st. We will be working on our dragster to improve its consistency. We
will also be training the pit crew so they can also drive the dragster
on the 21st. Hopefully, another dry day.

2003 Racing Season Updates
September
12, 2003
After countless disappointments last school year, we finally
got the car up and running yesterday. And for a change, we have
a race day without rain. We didn't get off to a good start today,
however. First, we could not get to the race track until 12:30.
When we got to the track, the races were well under way. When
junior dragsters were called up, we scrambled and got Samantha
suited up and belted in. We started the motor and waited to find
out which lane we were to run in. The crew spotted fuel spewing
all over the engine. We quickly shut the motor off. First thoughts
were, the Gremlins are back -- we would have to come back yet
another day. As it turned out, the alcohol fuel we use had made
the fuel lines brittle causing the fuel to leak at the barb on
the carburetor. We didn't come all this way to let some lame fuel
line spoil our day. Our crew went into ER mode and performed a
double bypass procedure. No leak is good leak -- fixed! Not bad,
as we got her fixed by the next time trial run. Meanwhile, Mac
and I had to submit a dial-in time. We weren't sure what to submit,
as the dragster had never gone down the track since we bought
it. Mac knew that the dragster ran in the mid to low 12's with
the previous owners. Being an eternal pessimist, I predicted mid
13's. We compromised and decided on a 13 second flat, dial-in
time. Wow, we should have bought lottery tickets today, because
on the first time trial run , Samantha ran a 13.10. The next run
produced another 13.10! How often does that happen? She then ran
times of 13.01, 13.06, and
13.36. Well, we newbies from some unknown middle school who came
out on the second last day of the season with a rookie driver
(a girl, of all things) just takes it all. Yep, we took first
place. Those Gremlins are out of there! During the elimination
rounds, Samantha kept focused and her reaction times improved
with each run. Check out the time slips
and pics.
Congratulations, Samantha, you've
got nerves of steel. Pit crew, you were awesome! Your teamwork
was as good, if not better, than those of the pro racers who were
at the test and tune. Mr. Mac and Mr. Sakai are really proud of
the way you guys represented our school. If all goes well, we
have one more race day left. October 10th. Let's hope for another
dry day.
GREMLINS at WORK!
Carburetor seized up -- leaks from the gaskets -- had to replace
whole carburetor -- none available in BC.
Fuel supply line split -- replaced with SS braided Teflon hose.
Alternate driver crashes into bushes on a practice run. Driver
is OK, but the dragster body needs repair.
Car is ready to run, but the track closes for the next three
consecutive race days due to rain resulting in no runs in the
2002/2003 school year.
On September 12, 2003, the Race Gods take pity on us and chase
the Gremlins away........ we take first place! Good things come
to those who wait.
Update! March 30, 2003
Mr. McAvoy and Mr. Sakai weren't able to get the junior dragster
ready for Friday's High School Drags at Mission Raceway Park.
We had a little carburetor problem and the parts we needed to
fix the problem were not readily available. However, the team
did manage to get to the track to see how things operated. It
was awesome to see all the different vehicles at the track. Being
a test and tune day, we got to see a few really quick cars that
were into the 9's and 10's. There was only one other junior dragster
there, so I guess we weren't the only middle school not ready
for day one. There were quite a few high school teams there, including
our friends from Mouat Racing. Robert Bateman, Abbotsford Senior,
and Yale from our school district were also at the track. We have
two weeks to get ready for the next high school drags. The team
just can't wait to get their feet wet. SPONSORS, we need to get
more sponsors! We need desperately to get us a trailer built,
so we don't have to carry the dragster in the back of a pickup
truck. We've got lots of room on our dragster for advertisement.
If you or anyone you know would like to sponsor our team, drop
us a line.
