Polling Station for Provincial Election
Tuesday, May 17 is Provincial Election Day. Our school's gym will
be used for a polling station. The gym will be closed for school use
from 7:00 a.m. through to 8:00 p.m. The polling station will open
at 8:00 a.m. We will have limited parking on campus for those
that will be coming to the school to vote. We have received
permission from Gladwin Heights United Church on the corner of Gladwin
Road and Old Riverside Road to use their parking lot on that day.
April's Student of the Month
Congratulations to Rebecca M. for being named April's Grade 8 Kiwanis
Student of the Month. Rebecca is an outstanding student, a great
athlete and a student leader at the school. In April Rebecca
represented the school as a member of our girls rugby team, Wolf
catering club and was a Grade 8 representative at the District public
speaking finals.
Multicultural Days
We will be celebrating our school's rich multicultural diversity on
Thursday, May 26 and Friday, May 27. Our Pit Stop coordinator
Mrs. K. Chartier and our Home Arts teacher Mr. P. Lilly will be
combining forces to provide some options for students at lunch to
sample foods from various cultures. On Thursday afternoon, May
26th there will be a program of cultural dance and music in the gym
honoring many of the cultural backgrounds of students who attend this
school. In addition there will be some activities in classes pertaining
to various cultures that make up the Canadian mosaic.
Grade 8 Farewell
Board Approval has been given for this year's “Grade 8 Farewell”.
The plan this year is to combine a variety of activities that include
the outdoors and ensure that the event will be very affordable and
include the entire graduating class. On Friday, June 10th
students will be bussed to Cultis Lake where they will spend a
few hours hiking in the Teapot Hill area. At 2:00 they will be
transported to the Cultis Lake Waterslides and will spend the balance
of the afternoon enjoying that facility. At 5:00 they will be
returned to the school to enjoy a barbecue meal provided by staff and
parents. At 7:00 there will be an option to participate in a
dance in the gym or alternative activities in the library and
multipurpose room. At 8:30 p.m.we would ask that parents be
available to pick their child up from the school. The total cost for
transportation, entrance to the Water slides and the dinner will only
be $15.00. More information will follow in the next few
weeks.
Mountain Bike Club
Last week a number of our Wolves traveled to Aldergrove to compete in
the second race of their mountain bike season. The boys had a
great race as each person on the team improved their placing from the
previous week's race in Port Coquitlam. Our Wolves were relentless as
they rode a grueling 35-40 minutes over a soft, uneven course.
Here are a few pictures of the boy's in action!
P.A.C. meeting
Our next P.A.C. meeting is slated for May 16th at 7:00 pm.
Elections for the P.A.C. Executive for 2005-2006 will take place that
evening.
May Long Weekend
Friday, May 20th will be the final School Closure Day of this school
year. Monday, May 23rd is the annual Victoria Day holiday.
Classes will not be in session on either day.
Mark Your Calendars - Sports Banquet
After hundreds of memorable moments on and off the playing field, it is
time to celebrate the achievements of our many Wolves who took part in
our school athletic program. This year the school athletic
banquet will be taking place on Friday, June 17th. Mr. Lilly’s
catering team will be providing dinner and rumor has it the meal may
consist of pork tenderloin, roasted baby potatoes, salads, etc.
The cost for this event will be a mere $5 and deadline for purchasing a
ticket is Friday, June 10th. Tickets will be available at
the office next week. All athletes and their families are
invited to attend.
Rugby - Boys Team
Blessed with a roster deep in talent, coaches Farley and Laudadio have
the boys rugby team running on all cylinders. The team
ended the year with a record of 5 wins and just 1 lose. This was
good enough for the team to earn second place in their division.
This was the best ever finish for our Wolves during regular season
play. However, the journey is not over. The team took part
in their first playoff test this week versus a skilled team from
Westview in Maple Ridge. The action on the field was filled with
hard hitting, powerful running and tremendous passing. The teams
appeared evenly matched in the first few minutes of the match but our
Wolves soon took over the game after a number of brilliant
plays. The final score was 48-12 for C.D.G. Boseko L.,
Stuart W., Eddy L. and Mark C. were singled out by the coaches for
their efforts in securing the Chief Dan victory. However,
the man of the match was Sam B. who played spectacularly, taking over
for absent team leader Kris V. Sam demonstrated leadership on the
field which contagiously spread through the team and helped propel the
team to the big victory. Last night the boys won their semi-final
game against Aldergrove and are now on to the finals vs Reimer next
Thursday! Well done boys!
Rugby - Girls Team
The girls rugby team, led by coaches Farley, Schafer and McAvoy, were
in tough this year. Boasting a roster with a number of players
who had never played rugby before made the season a definite learning
experience. However, our girls did not let their lack of
experience stop them from competing game in and game out. Led by
the stellar efforts of players such as Melissa L., Aniya G. and Rebecca
M. the team fought hard in all of their matches. The final game
of the season was a hard fought battle against their cross town rivals
from Clayburn. The girls put up heroic effort in their final game
of the season but came up on the losing end of a 25-10 score.
Great effort girls on a memorable season!
Mountain Bike Club/Team
The newest kid on the block as far as the athletic program is concerned
here at Chief Dan George Middle is the mountain bike club/team.
Led by coaches Piper, Richards and Schafer the two wheel crew has
gotten things rolling in the last couple of weeks. The club is
currently comprised of approximately 30 students from grade 6 -
8. In the club’s first few rides, they have been working on fine
tuning their bike handling skills in a variety of terrain. As
well, the cardio demands are ever increasing making these students
truly tough athletes. The focus of the club is to learn a few
things about mountain biking but most importantly the agenda is to have
a fun time! The club currently meets on Friday afternoons from
2:45 until 5pm. New members are always welcome to come join the
club. Just remember that you need a bike with brakes, a noodle
protector (helmet) and permission form from Mr. Piper.
The Mountain bike racing team is another component of the mountain bike
scene here at C.D.G. The team is currently comprised of 5 members
who take part in races against students from throughout the lower
mainland. The Race team members are Geordi S., Jeffrey T., Colton
B., Caleb P., and Nigel D.. The team’s first few races have been
unbelievable as the boys battled difficult terrain at a hilly course at
Buntzen Lake in Port Moody and a uneven, soft course at Alder Acres out
in Aldergrove. Based upon the current results, Geordi S. is
Abbotsford’s fastest grade 8 rider.
Don’t forget ...... Yearbooks are on sale ..... limited supply!
$20.00 each
Available before and after school each day in the office.
Wrestling
The wrestling program at C.D.G. is led by Coach Mitchell. He has
a tremendous wrestling background and has shared his expertise with our
Wolves who have been busy attending practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays
after school. As Coach Mitchell is in charge of the wrestling
program at Mouat, this has been an excellent opportunity for our
students to get some experience before high school. This week
marks the final week of the month long wrestling experience here at
Chief Dan. Congratulations to all those students who took part in
the action on the mat.
Track and Field
Led by coaches McTaggart, Bunbury, Constant, Richards and Piper our
track stars have been busy fine tuning their skills in preparation for
our upcoming track meets. For grade 8’s the track season has
involved practices on Monday and Wednesday with athletes from Mouat
over at Rotary stadium. In addition, all of our Wolves are
practicing on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. The team looks
to be coming together very nicely in time for both our school track
meet and the end of the year district championships.
Key Communicator
Key Communicators who represent each school’s Parent Advisory Council,
meet with the Superintendent several times during the school
year. The final meeting for 2004/05 is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.,
Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at Colleen and Gordie Howe Middle School (3174
Clearbrook Road). ALL parents are welcome to attend.

others in the province last Monday in conducting a mock provincial
election. The program was funded by Election B.C., the Federal and
Provincial governments and a group of corporate sponsors. Mlle
Janzen's homeroom class, Division 12, presented platforms of the
various candidates in this voting area a few days leading up to the
mock vote and students were given the opportunity to attend a polling
station set up in a classroom to cast their votes. Results for
the school and provincially will be made available in the next

offer a sampling of ethnic foods for sale during the lunch periods on
those days. On the afternoon of Thursday, May 26th there will a

school.
Extra-curriculars
Sports history was made at this school last week when our boys rugby
team defeated Eugene Reimer Ravens to win the Upper Fraser Valley
championships for 2005. The game was an extremely close and hard
fought battle that ended in a 10 - 5 score. Leading up to
that game the Ravens had won 13 straight games, had not lost against an
opponent in the Upper Valley region in three seasons, and were the
two-time Upper Valley champions. Congratulations to all the boys
involved and especially to volunteer community coaches Mr. Chris Farley
and Mr. Charles Laudadio.
Chess tournament
For the third straight year our school will be hosting a major regional
Chess Tournament. Teacher Mr. Kerry Sakai will once again be
organizing the event which will involve well over one hundred
elementary, middle school and high school aged students. Action
will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 28th and will run through the

Extreme Makeover - Courtyard Edition
Ms. McMillan in Student Services has rallied a small group of
enthusiastic grade 7 students to participate in the beautifying of our
outdoor courtyard at school. Our plans include the installation
of a pond and garden and the building of some benches and a fenced-in
area for recycling. Matt A., Stewart W., Justin A., Levi T., Jay
B., Levi H., Lee J, and Amrit S. have been willingly devoting their
free time to work on this project. So far, we’ve got a pond in the
ground and are working on getting it filled up with water and
surrounding it with plants. Keep up the great work boys! You are making
a lasting impression on Chief Dan George!
June’s Coming Quickly!
Please see our June calendar.

Chess Tournament a Huge Success
Chess tournament had approximately 220 players registered from around
the province. There were players from Kindergarten right up to grade
12. Some of the schools represented by a school team were: Dunach
Elementary, Bradner Elementary, Hope Lutheran, MEI Elementary, Clayburn
Middle, Eugene Reimer Middle, Rochester Elementary, Mouat Secondary,
Hatzic Elementary, Saint Mary's, Seaquam Secondary, Auguston, Anniedale
Traditional, Jessie Lee Elementary, Robert Bateman Secondary, Our Lady
of Assumption School, Mission Central Elementary. We had equal
representation from both private and public schools. Our team came in
2nd place! They all did very well, and our team average was very high.
Two individuals won trophies -- Justin L. 2nd place and Kyle P. 3rd
place. Both were tied with 4.5 points out of 5. Barry S. didn't place,
but accumulated 4 out of 5 points. The others were very close behind.
We're still number one in Abbotsford (Middle Schools)! We will soon be
having a school tournament to decide top chess players in Grade 6, 7, 8.
Chief Dan George Middle wins the District Track Meet
Yesterday under threatening skies 150 Track and Field athletes

an outstanding performance! Our Grade 6 boys, Grade 6 girls and

proud. Congratulations to P.E. coordinator/athletic director Mr.

Mountain Bike Club
Last Friday and Saturday the Mountain Bike Club was out doing their
thing. On Friday, we met up with the students from Eugene Reimer
Middle School and explored trails at Downes Bowl. About 35 kids
managed to cruise through the heat. Despite the occasional
wipeout, we all lasted to enjoy a feast of slushies over at Granny's
Market.
On Saturday, a select crew and Mr. Piper scaled the hill out at
Ledgeview. As none of the club members had ever ridden their
bikes up here before they were in for a real treat. The first
treat served up to them was the hour long climb (both pushing and
riding their bikes) to the top. After scaling the mountain, the
crew relaxed for a few pictures and took in the great view. Then
the downhill....good times and some great spills into the woods.
Three hours after we began, the crew ended up at the bottom of the ride
and headed off home for a well deserved rest.

Please Help the Animals
The Abbotsford SPCA is in need of good used towels to help with the
care and comfort of the animals at the shelter. Spring is here and that
means kitten season is upon us. Every spring/summer the shelter houses,
cares for and tries to find good homes for hundreds of “unwanted”
kittens left at the shelter or simply abandoned. They rely solely on
donations from a caring public to continues this sometimes
heartbreaking and overwhelming job. Your donation of clean usable
towels will help them to keep the cats and kittens in their care clean
and comfy while they wait for new homes. They are also in VERY BIG need
of dry cat food and dry/canned kitten food. Any donations would be
greatly appreciated. Please drop them off at the school office and a
grade 8 student will collect them and take them to the SPCA. Thank you!
from the staff and animals at the Abbotsford SPCA.
