Principal's Message
As many of you already know, I have received an opportunity to relocate to the Okanagan. My family and I will be moving to the Coldstream Valley, Vernon, and I will be Principal of a K-7 school in the Vernon School District. This is a plan my family has had for many years, so we consider ourselves very fortunate to have this exciting opportunity.

I do leave with great sadness though, because I have deeply enjoyed my 3.5 years at Chief Dan George. We have terrific students, parents and a very strong and dedicated staff. I believe the Middle School Philosophy is very powerful and successful and I'll miss this wonderful school.

I thank all who have contributed to the wonderful times I have had here at Chief Dan George Middle.

Chief Dan is very fortunate to be receiving Mr. Barry Dudzik as the next principal. Barry has been an administrator at Yale Secondary, Philip Sheffield Elementary and Centennial Park Elementary Schools. He is a quality person with a strong record here in Abbotsford. Please come out and meet Barry Monday, May 17th at the next PAC Meeting.
Brian Revel

Concours
Congratulations to all our "Concours d'art oratoire" who participated at the Provincial finals on the April 30th weekend. Congratulations to Jessica Warkentin for 3rd place in BC for Grade 6 Late Immersion. We are very proud of you Jessica and all our awesome French speakers.

CDGMS Chess Club Success!
Our chess club did very well at the North Poplar Fine Arts School Chess Tournament this past Saturday. Matt H. and Tim A. led the way, winning all of their games. The Chief Dan George team won the overall best team trophy! For the grade six category, Matthew G. took home the second place trophy and Falene K-M came away with the third place trophy. Our grade sevens were also successful with Tim A. and Sam B. coming in first and second, respectively. We only fielded two grade eights this time around, but they also did well with Matt H. taking first place and Matts B. taking second place. Magan H., Sheldon B., and Peter W. also did very well and came very, very close to making it a clean sweep for the grade seven category. Hats off to Mr. Glum who did a fantastic job of running a great tournament. Our very own chess tournament is coming up very quickly - May 29th to be exact. Like last year, we are anticipating a turn out of about 150 K to 12 chess enthusiasts from around the province. For more info, visit cdgms.com/chess2004.htm

The work is done largely by just a few people.  We would like to continue providing fun opportunities for the children, but we need your help. First, our treasurer is moving away. We are looking for someone with bookkeeping or accounting experience, capable of doing the books and our year end (simple) Financial Statement. This requires no more than 1 to 2 hours per month.  This is strictly volunteer, and we would greatly appreciate if you can help us. If you can, or know of someone who is willing, please phone Susan Asaph, President of CPF Abbotsford, at 604-864-6309. In addition, your school reps need volunteers to help occasionally for an hour or two, just when we're holding special events.  If you are willing to help out on such a basis, please phone your school rep and leave your name and phone number. Your school rep is: Maureen Thompson 604-853-0384

Help!
In order to receive funds, our PAC is required to send a volunteer to the Abbotsford Bingo Hall once a month on Friday afternoons, 2:30 - 6:00 p.m. We need help on the following dates:

A Tribute To Quebec
Nicolle Hodges

I miss you Quebec,
Your smooth tasty language,
That rolls over my English tongue,
Like melted chocolate.
I miss you Quebec,
I miss the old stories your buildings told,
The way the angel statues scraped the sky,
With their curious gray fingertips.
I miss you Quebec,
With your dark cobble stone pathways,
Leading into ancient churches,
And the passionate hearts of it's ancient people,
Consumed,
Hypnotized,
In your everlasting beauty.
I miss you Quebec,
Your warm embrace held me close,
Through each humid day.
You helped my soul escape through my skin,
And by God I danced carelessly upon your streets,
Feeling exposed to the world,
Feeling naked within a blanket of laughter and applause,
Feeling absolutely wonderful.
My tongue swept across your smooth ice cream,
My fingers caressed your unknown stone temples.
You gazed upon me with your loving, welcoming eyes.
You swallowed me gently within your mouth of wonders and I was willingly washed away into your past.
I miss you Quebec,
The freedom you made me feel every moment I was awake.
And even condemned beneath the covers of the starry night,
Your life still breathed through my bones and I simply longed for the moment I would wake again.
I miss you Quebec,
My hands miss your dirt and your dust,
They miss your brick and your stone,
My eyes miss your legends,
They miss the angels and the people all mingled together in a blind crowd, which took my breath away.
My ears miss you Quebec,
They miss the sounds of your nightlife and the soft whispers of your language.
The laughter behind your winds and the deep silences within your churches.
I miss you Quebec,
You arose a life deep inside the red core of my heart and shattered the conformity I felt before.
So thank you Quebec,
My longing to return to your arms is unspoken.
And though you may not remember me,
For I was simply another girl with a cheap camera,
Admiring your magnificence,
Complimenting the beauty you know you have.
As far as my mind can wander,
I was on that boat back in 1534 discovering you for the first time.
My tears of relief sinking into your waters.
My joy casting a beginning into your streets,
And my love creating the first sunset to smear across the darkening sky.
I discovered you secretly,
I escaped my dungeon momentarily.
And though the key to my hotel room, within your ancient belly, has faded from my grasp,
I remember what I saw,
What I heard,
What I tasted.
And like a sweet candy slowly melting away,
The aftertaste rests upon my tongue,
Staining it blue and white like the patriotic flag.
So thank you Quebec,
For breathing a deep appreciation into my soul.
And thank you to my teachers,
For being the reason why I now understand why they love French so much.
Because,
It's like candy,
A beautiful smooth taste,
That we are all blessed to unwrap.

I would like to thank all the parents for your support and patronage throughout the year. Without your participation the program could not continue. The program seemed to be a huge success. We averaged from 50 to 130 students each day and the menu items were well recieved. I need to say a huge thank you to the PAC for their financial support (they generously helped supply a much needed cooler for the Home Ec room), and to Mrs. Hollanti who generously gave up a part of her lunch hour every day to man the till. Also a thank you to Mrs. Williams who helped out a lunch also. THANK YOU ALL! Thanks again to all involved, Mr. Lilly

Wildfire Safety
Over half of all wildfires in B.C. are caused by the carelessness of people. Please use extreme caution this summer when camping with your families. When building a campfire be sure to clear a large area around the fire pit, keeping the fire well away from logs, stumps, shrubs and trees. Scrape down deep into the soil, and build a ring of rocks around the fire pit. Keep the fire small and always have a shove and pail of water nearby. Never leave a campfire unattended. Always extinguish fires until they are cool to the touch. Please ensure all cigarettes are extinguished in a suitable ashtray. If you see a wildfire please report it to 1-800-663-5555.
