Best wishes to all families of the Chief Dan George school community
for a safe and enjoyable Victoria Day Long Weekend.
Wolf Racing News
Our drag racing team went to Mission Raceway Park on May 4th only to
have the event cancelled. The day looked somewhat promising early in
the morning, but the weather did not improve as forecasted. As soon as
the track dried up, it started to rain again. This cycle continued for
three and a half hours. The students did a sundance, but to no avail.
With over half of the day spent waiting for the weather to get better,
the track officials called it off. Hopefully, our next track date, this
coming Friday, May 18th will be dry. Last year, only one track date got
cancelled due to poor weather. Two years ago, every track date except
one was rained out. Word has it that if the Mighty Fraser keeps rising
as predicted, we won't be racing at MRP for a long time. Plan B would
be to try and make it over to Eagle Motorplex in Ashcroft for a few
events late in June and in the summer.
Wolves
Athletics News
Congratulations to both boys and girls rugby teams. The
girls advanced to the playoffs for the first time and lost a hard
fought game to Reimer. With Captain Jacquie T. injured, Lynai G. and
Yanieska V. stepped up and made the Reimer forwards work for every inch
of ground. Well done girls! The boys finished second in the
District Playoffs behind Fraser. The boys fought hard with
depleted numbers due to injuries and should be proud of the hard work
and perseverance displayed against a Fraser team of
forty-eight players. Micheal K., Michael B., Jon W. and
Mitchel V. lead the team with hard running. Their final
game is at Earl Marriot in Surrey on Thursday, May 24th @ 2:00
pm.
We had a great day for our school track meet last Thursday and by all
reports, students had a great time. Those athletes that placed
top four in their events at our school track meet will have the option
of representing CDG on Thursday, May 31st at the District Middle School
Track and Field Championships to be held at Rotary Stadium. Those
athletes who placed top 4 in their events at our school track meet will
have the option of representing CDG on May 31. There will be a
practice schedule posted and athletes must attend to qualify for the
District.
The Annual CDG
Athletic Banquet is scheduled for Friday, June 15th in our
gymnasium from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm. Over the next few weeks coaches
will be contacting those students from their teams who are award
recipients. The ticket price is $8.00 each or 2 for
$15.00 and includes one of Mr. Lilly's famous dinner entrees with
dessert and of course the awards assembly itself complete with door
prizes. There will be an announcement when tickets go on sale.

Home Reading
Challenge
The April 2007 Home Reading Challenge was sponsored by the Abbotsford
School District to promote a positive home-school connection and
encourage students to read for enjoyment. The English track Grade 8 and
Grade 7 students from Chief Dan George participated in the contest,
recording individual minutes read as well as the total amount of
minutes read by each division. Ms. Schafer reports that 303 hours
of reading put Div. 19 in the lead for the grade 8’s, with Div.
20 next at 225 hours and Div. 21 with 112 hours. In
Grade 7, Mrs. Reimer kept track of a close race. After four weeks, Div.
9 led with 173 hours, and Div. 10 (150 hours) and Div. 8 (144 hours)
were right behind them. The top 5 classes in the district
received a collection of books for their classroom library, valued at
$200.00 We did not win this year, but watch out for some serious
reading rivalries between Chief Dan George and C & G Howe and
Eugene Reimer Middle Schools next year!
Individual students who participated and read over 1000 minutes had
their names entered into a draw for the 12 gift cards for Science
World, worth $50.00 . The names of the following students from CDGMS
were entered into the draw and Jasmeet S. was lucky enough to have her
name selected. Congratulations to all the students who participated in

THE MONTH OF
JUNE AT CDG
There are a number of class, team and school wide events planned for
the last month of the school year. In recent years the school has
established some great traditions to recognize and honor parents,
students and staff. On Friday evening, June 15th we will be
holding our third annual Athletic Awards Banquet. This is a wonderful
evening to recognize the many talented athletes at this school as well
as honor the many staff and parents volunteers that coach through the
school year and support our extracurricular athletic program.
Home Arts teacher Mr. Paul Lilly and his Wolf Catering Team will once
again put on a fabulous full meal for all who attend. The cost
per ticket is $8.00 (or two for $15.00). Tickets can be
purchased at the school office through the day. Our year end
band/music concert will take place on Monday evening, June 18th at
Central Heights Church. This event is a tremendous celebration of
the powerful program that Chief Dan George offers. There is no
charge for admission. The event starts at 7:00 pm. Our
second annual Grade 8 dinner/dance is scheduled for Monday evening June
25th. Again Mr. Paul Lilly and his Wolf Catering students will
put on a delicious full meal and Grade 8 students are welcome to enjoy
a celebration of their transition from middle school to high
school. The cost for tickets for the dinner/dance is
$10.00 The event starts at 6:00 pm and will end at 9:00 pm.
We would ask that students and their parents assist us with maintaining
a spirit of informality around the event. Our end of year awards
assembly will take place in the morning of Thursday, June 28th, the
last day in session this school year. The Awards assembly will
begin at 10:15 am and run through to noon.
French
Immersion 8 Trip to Quebec
Our Grade 8 French Immersion students and their teachers enjoyed
another very successful trip to Quebec City and Montreal this year and
came back exhausted and enriched from the experience. Our students
experienced French Canadian culture and language first-hand and did an
excellent job representing our school. They were complimented on their
behaviour and their French language skills every place that we visited
and their teachers are very proud of their hard work and their efforts
in that regard. We will be celebrating this year's trip and watching
the iMovie on the evening of Wednesday June 6th in the gym. The meeting
is scheduled for 7:00 pm and will last approximately 45 minutes. We
wish to invite all of those students and their parents that
participated and supported our trip to attend and join in the
celebration. We also wish to thank parents for their continued support
of the program at our school.
School Goals
for next year
The staff and School Planning Council have submitted school goals to
the District office for 2007-2008. Given the great concerns that
have been growing around health and fitness among the young, the school
will be adopting a new focus next year which will support increased
awareness and activities related to this area. In addition, the
school's focus on reading comprehension will remain as a second
maintenance goal.
Report Card
Issue
On Friday, June 29th final report cards will be issued in our
multi-purpose room throughout the day. Pick up will begin at 10:00
am and will end at 2:30 pm. Those report cards not picked up will
be mailed home in the third week of July. Assessment notices
regarding fees for lost text books and library books will be sent home
during the week of June 18th to 22nd. Please ensure that your
families accounts are up to date before report card issue.

Band Concert in our Gym and CDG Year End Band Concert at Central
Heights Church

end middle school band concert in our gym on Tuesday, June 5th. The
event will start at 7:00 pm and everyone is welcome to attend.
One group from each of the middle schools will be performing and our

Congratulations to Hailey K. for being chosen CDG's Student of the
Month for May. She is a top-notch student and artist, as well as a
fantastic citizen of the school. Hailey has been working tirelessly for
Mrs. Chartier in the Pit Stop all year and goes about her business with
a real maturity and respect for her teachers. She was involved in our
"Aladdin" production, she plays in the jazz band and is a
well-deserving candidate.

Wolves
Athletics News
We have had another banner athletic year at Chief Dan George.
Over 50% of our students were involved in one or more extracurricular
sports. Our Gr. 8 boys basketball team advanced to the Fraser
Valley Championships for the first time. The X-Country Team
included more runners than any other middle school with outstanding
performances from students at all grade levels. The Gr. 7 boys
and girls volleyball teams both won the District Championships ahead of
some very good teams. Our boys rugby team advanced to the Fraser
Valley Championships for the second time, finishing a respectable
seventh. Finally, our track and field team had another strong
season with a second place showing at the District Middle School Track
and Field Meet. Nicholas Denis broke three track records in the
100 m (11.85 s), 200 m (24.7 s) and 400 m (56.76 s). Emily Enns,
a very strong Gr. 6 runner broke the 1500 m record at 5:52 and
Francesca Jackman won a gold medal in the Gr. 7 girls pentathalon
competition. These are just a few of the highlights from a great
year in athletics at CDG.
Athletic
Banquet, Student Involvement in Extracurricular Sports and School
Goal for Next Year
Our third annual Athletic Banquet will take place tomorrow evening,
Friday, June 15th. Dinner takes place from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm and
presentations from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Tickets are $8.00 or two for
$15.00. Wolf Catering, under the direction of teacher Mr. Paul
Lilly, will provide the meal. The absolute last chance to
purchase tickets will be before school on Friday morning.
Secretary Mrs. Hollanti will be available in the office from 7:30
am to 8:00 am. for any last minute purchases. A
recent survey of students indicates that 54% of our student body
represented the school in at least one extracurricular sport this
school year. This translates to 324 students participating in at
least one extracurricular sport at this school! The
breakdown by grade had 62% of Grade 6's involved, 60% of Grade 7
students and 40% of Grade 8 students. In the light of concerns
that have come out of recent studies related to health and fitness
among the young in our society the school has adopted a health and
fitness goal for the upcoming school year. Various
strategies and initiatives will be added to what we presently do to
address these important areas of development.
Drag Racing News
*excerpt from the wolf racing web pages...
We had a cheering section at the track this time around, as the
special needs students from our school attended the event. It was a
great day for them as they got to go around the pit area to see all the
highly modified cars and drag bikes that were at the test and tune.
Toward the end of the day, ‘Moly’ ran into some problems. It was a
little eerie watching a junior dragster going down the track slower
than a toddler riding a tricycle. The drive shaft was spinning at the
chain sprocket. Either the key wore out or it came loose. The
dragster was just struggling to get to the end of the 1/8 mile. One of
the givens in drag racing is that things break all the time. We have
been so fortunate with this aspect in the past.
Well, the law of averages finally caught up with us. The good news is,
our main sponsor, Rad Torque Systems, has the facilities and know how
to fix most, if not all, of our problems which brings me to one of the
success stories of the day. Our sponsor, Mr. Dan Provost of Rad Torque
Systems, is a drag racer himself. He recently purchased a new full
sized dragster (rail car). Friday was the first time he was going to be
in it. He set his goals for 7 second runs. The track was not ideal as
the temperatures were pretty low, but by the end of the day, he got
into the low 7's (7.12) at 192 MPH. The car could have gone faster, but
it was losing traction from start to finish. If conditions were right,
he would have easily been in the 6's. It was simply amazing to see
something that fast go down the track from the vantage point we had -
the staging lanes.
Next up for us is a two day event at Ashcroft. For three years we have
been trying to go up to Eagle Motorplex Park in Ashcroft to race.
Unlike MRP, where we might compete with two or three junior dragsters,
we will be facing a dozen or more competitors. The students will be
going up on Friday afternoon and camp overnight for the next two
nights. We will be at Ashcroft with Mr. Johnson and Team Mouat. Because
of the traveling restrictions we are faced with, we will only be taking
six of our team members. Three of them are drivers, so they will be
assigned a car each and go head to head with other junior dragsters
from schools in the Interior. We are looking forward to seeing our
friends from Merritt again, who we met once or twice at MRP over the
years. As soon as we get back from Ashcroft, we will race at MRP again
on the last day of school. Plans for attending the events during the
summer months are still being discussed, but the season will come to a
close with two events left in September. For the full version and
more about our team, please visit www.cdgms.com/wolf_racing.htm
Kiwanis Grade 8
Student of the Month for June
Congratulations to Jonathan Watson for being named our Student of the
Month for June. Jon is an a student, a great citizen of the school and
has represented CDG at a very high level in a number of extracurricular
sports this year.
Student
projections for next year
We are projecting about the same number of students next year as we had
in this school year (i.e. 600 students). Given that we offer
three major programs we are limited by the number of seats in any one
program we are at capacity in a number of classes. If you
are aware that your Grade 6 or 7 child will not be returning to our
school next September and you have not yet communicated that
information to the school we would ask that you do that
immediately. We are heavily involved in the staffing
process at this point and require very accurate data around student
numbers in order to plan for the upcoming year. Thank you.
Canteen Closing
The last day for the school Canteen will be Friday, June 22nd.
Year End Band
Concert
We would like to invite you to celebrate the tremendous growth and
success of our band and music program at Chief Dan George through
attending the Year End concert. Monday evening, June 18th at
Central Heights Church all of our bands and our choir will be
performing. Due to the generosity of our school P.A.C., who will
be covering the cost of the facility rental, there will not be a
charge to attend the performance. Please join us on June 18th.
Band/Choir Uniform shirts: All those who rented shirts need to
return them washed to Ms. Norton next week (anytime after Monday's
concert). Please be sure to tape your child's name on them so she
knows who they belonged to.
Grade 8
Transition to high school
Mouat counselors met with each Grade 8 homeroom teacher at the
beginning of the week to discuss students who will be entering Grade 9
next September. Also, Mouat staff have set up a morning
experience for girls entering Grade 9 next year. Our Grade 8
girls will spend the morning at Mouat Secondary on Tuesday, June
26th. Busing will be provided free of charge.
W.J. Mouat Parent Advisory Council would like to invite all Grade
9 parents moving up to WJM in September, to our final PAC
night of the school year. Tuesday, June 19th @ 7:00 pm in
the school library, WJM Administrators and Mouat Volunteer Parents
(MVPs) will be on hand to meet and greet new grade 9
parents. Please join us for light refreshments and if you
like, a school tour can be arranged with Mr. Rob Comeau, our
Principal. Come by and hear all about your new school, WJM is a
great place to be involved. We are currently seeking interested
parents for the 2007-2008 PAC Executive. WJM has a very active
group of volunteer parents working in all areas of the school. We
invite all parents to be a part of the Mouat Parent Family.

their child's final report. Those that are unable to pick up
reports this Friday are able to do so in our school office the
following week. Summer hours in the office will be 7:00 am
to 2:00 pm daily. Any reports not picked up by the end of
the first week of July will be mailed home.
Wolves Racing
News
Our team just got back from our trip to Eagle Motorplex Park in
Ashcroft, BC. We took two of our dragsters and six of our team members
and their parents. It was a great experience for both the adults and
the students who went on the three-day trip. Unlike our local track,
Mission Raceway Park, Eagle Motorplex attracts a large contingent of
junior dragsters each time they are open. This past weekend, there were
approximately 16 to 18 junior dragsters in the field. That’s a lot of
competition. On Saturday, one of our cars made it past the first round
of eliminations and was about to go past the second when the car
experienced an electrical problem. A wire had shaken itself loose at
the steering wheel and grounded out the ignition. That’s what racing is
all about. Things can be going very well for most of the day only to
have it all fall apart due to an unfortunate mechanical problem. Our
team will be at Mission Raceway Park this coming Friday.
Staff farewells
and staffing for next year
At a school of this size we are always in a position to bid farewell to
some staff at the end of the school year. In this era of
increased temporary contracts and layoffs based upon seniority some
staff are declared surplus and then returned to various positions
within the district through the summer months. At this point in
the hiring process we have eight staff that presently are not slated to
return to this school next year. We wish to thank teaching
assistants Ms. Sabrina Lal and Mrs. Janice Greenwood for their support
of some of our more challenged children. We also have good wishes and
thanks for teachers Ms. Cheryl Frank, Mr. Tyler Baruta, Mrs. Crystal
Banks, Mrs. Darlene Cotten, Mlle Kirsten Janzen and Mrs. Pat
Smith for their leadership and support. We are still hopeful that
some of these staff members will be placed with us for next year.
For those that will have assignments in other schools we are confident
that the experiences and training they have had at Chief Dan George
Middle School will enable them to provide high quality service in the
coming years.
In terms of staffing changes for next year, at this point we only have
a few announcements to make. Ms. Brandy McIntyre will be moving
from our Late French Immersion program to assume a position in our
Learning Services Team next year. Ms. McIntyre's training and
experiences form a unique blend that will allow us to provide very good
service to all three of our major programs within the school. Ms.
McIntyre's replacement will be Mrs. Louise Jenkins. Mrs. Jenkins
has a number of years of experience in French Immersion instruction
working at both the primary and intermediate level. Further
staffing announcements will be provided in the summer letter that
families will receive a few weeks prior to school opening in
September.
Last day in session for 2006/07 will be Thursday, June 28th
Tomorrow, Thursday, June 28th, will be the last day in session for this
school year. Classes will meet in the morning and then
all students and staff will participate in an
assembly for some year end awards recognition. Certificate awards
will be provided to students for academic honor roll achievement, work
habits honor roll, and perfect attendance. There will also be
some minor awards recognition for specialty areas including mathematics
contests and writing contests. In addition, a few major
awards will also be presented that will include top academic
achievement in Grade 8. The assembly will end at noon and classes
will reconvene in the afternoon to finish off the school
year.
Grade 7
Walkathon
This month Grade seven English students participated in a walk a thon
to raise money for Elizabeth's Wildlife Society.
The students collected pledges in early June and completed the 3 hour
walk-a-thon on June 19th. On Wednesday June 27th the students
presented Elizabeth with a cheque for $1001.04. Congratulations
students for a job well done.
On Friday
evening, June 22nd at the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for
Life, Walker Bradley had his hair cut on stage to donate to
“Angel Hair for Kids”, an organization that provide wigs to children
who have lost their hair. He was the largest single fundraiser at the
Abbotsford event raising over $4000.00 to help “make cancer
history”. Congratulations Walker!
