School Calendar
Survey for 2006/2007 School Year
The Ministry of Education provides local school boards autonomy and
flexibility to decide on a school calendar that suits the needs of each
district. A committee of eighteen representing parents, teachers,
support staff, principals, trustees and school district management
collaborated on the development of a survey to go to all stakeholders.
Purpose -- The purpose of this survey is to provide your input to the
board of School Trustees as they decide upon a school calendar for the
2006/2007 school year.
Duration -- The survey will be available online from January 9-20,
2006. Our preference is for parents to complete the survey
online. You can access it from any computer connected to the
internet (see Access below). If you prefer, you may complete the survey
online at your neighbourhood school. If you require a printed
copy, they are available at your school office. Any printed surveys
should be completed and returned to the school by Friday, January
20th. Survey data will be tabulated on Monday, January 23rd.
Access -- Online access is available at the following website:
http://www.sd34.bc.ca/schools/calendarsurvey Please follow
the instructions.
The online survey provides details on the pros and cons of various
options and past practice in the
school district. A survey in Punjabi will be made available at
your neighbourhood school upon request.
Satisfaction
Survey 2005/06
The Provincial Satisfaction Survey is unique in its scope, size and
usefulness to schools. It gathers information from parents,
teachers and students on topics related to school environment, safety
and achievement. The information is used for planning in
individual schools and provides a district and provincial perspective.
Early in 2006 the Satisfaction Survey will be administered to students
in grade 7, their parents, and all school staff. We
encourage parents to participate in this survey, as the results
are important in identifying and celebrating
current strengths, as well as determining where the school needs to
focus improvement. The surveys contain
standard questions for the Province, in addition, questions from the
school and/or district that focus on local conditions or issues may be
included.
Surveys will be coming home with your child(ren) in the near
future. Please complete the survey and return to the
school by February 10, 2006.
KEY
COMMUNICATORS, who represent each school’s Parent Advisory
Council, meet with the Superintendent several times during the school

the School Board Office (2790 Tims Street). ALL parents are

ATHLETICS NEWS
Gr. 6 girls and boys basketball begins this week with the girls playing
Monday at home against Simpson Traditional and practicing at
lunch on Thursday. The boys will practice Monday and Tuesday at
lunch with games scheduled at home on Jan. 30th and away on Feb.
13th. Refer to team schedules for locations. Gr. 7 girls and boys
teams continue their league schedule this week with the girls at home
and boys away to Reimer. Last week the boys played hard but came
away with a 62 - 20 loss to Abby Middle. The girls won a close
game 30 - 24 against a tough Abby Middle team.
Gr. 7 girls and boys are about half way through their league
schedule. The boys had a tough week with losses to MEI (67 - 38)
and Fraser (35 - 28). Coaches Klim and Janzen point out that once
the boys become more confident with their new offence they will be hard
to beat. The girls also had a tough week with losses to MEI (39 -
25) and a “nail - bitter” to Fraser ( 24 - 22). Coaches Schafer
and Goerzen are working with the girls on several defensive sets over
the next few weeks.
News of a wrestling opportunity at the Legacy Building next to
Rotary Stadium after school each week will be available soon.
Stay tuned.
Grade 8 Boys
Basketball
The boys have all been working really hard, not just at games but also
during their practices. Early in the season we lost Zach H. with
a broken foot, but he has persevered and is now back ripping up the
court with his amazing speed. Other team members such as Hardeep
G., Allan D., Josh F. and Jason L. have been putting points on the
board. The boys are half way through the season, and are coming
up against some tough teams. Coach Klim and Janzen have been
optimistic that the boys will improve their record in the final games
that are to be played. Coaches Klim is very impressed with his
team's effort, and is working towards getting the boys mentally
prepared for the next games and their tournament at Mouat this
weekend. If anyone is interested the boys play at 9am at Mouat on
Saturday Jan 21st, come out and cheer on the team.

Grade 8 Boys
The boys regular season has come to an end, and the have worked really
hard to try and climb the standings before playoffs. Mr. Klim and
Ms. Janzen have been really impressed with the boys determination in
the past few weeks. The boys finished in 2nd place in their
tournament at Mouat, with exceptional playing from Zach H., Hardeep G.,
Kevin N. and Allen D.. Mr. Klim was quoted as saying "these boys
have great determination and heart, and work very hard to get the job
done on the court. I have been really impressed with the caliber
of play they have been demonstrating, and am encouraged going into
playoffs. These boys have worked hard this year, and I am very
proud of their accomplishments and attitudes." The boys start
their playoff games on February 6th, and are currently in 6th place out
of the 12 teams in their league. Mr. Klim and Ms. Janzen

Kids Helping
Kids - Fund raising for the Variety Club of BC Children's Charity
On Friday, January 20th, Division 22 took part in the Bowl For
Kids event in support of the Variety Club Children's Charity. We
had a great time bowling and thanks to the generosity of Students,
Staff and Parents at Chief Dan George we raised $1040.00 for the
Variety Club in this event. We have also sold about 75 of the
Gold Heart Variety Club Pins. We still have about 25 left for
anyone who would still like one. This is the week of our Bottle
Drive "Hair for Charity". If the
students bring in $1000.00 or more worth of returnable bottles, five
brave
teachers have volunteered to shave their heads. We all want to
see Mr. McCarthy, Mr. Sakai, Mr. Laudadio, Mr. Richards and Mr. Kilm
with no hair, so bring in those bottles. Friday, February 3 is
the last day. Don't forget that the class that brings in the most
bottles are the lucky ones who get to do the shaving!!

Wolves
Athletics News
The Gr. 8 basketball teams finished successful seasons by making the
Fraser Valley Championships. The boys and girls lost in the first
round in two hard fought games. Head Coaches Mr. Klim and Ms.
Schafer point to improved defensive play and better understanding of
offensive sets as high points of the season. As an added bonus,
the Gr. 8 Girls won the Most Sportsmanlike Team award through league
play and playoffs. Well done girls.
The Gr. 7 basketball teams have two weeks left in their
schedules. Coaches Mr. Dugdale and Mr. McTaggart applaud the
incredible participation rates with a combined total of 44 athletes
playing Gr. 7 basketball.
The Gr. 6 basketball teams finish their schedule this week as well with
tournaments home and away to Abby Middle. Again participation
rates were oustanding with a combined total of 50 athletes playing boys
and girls basketball.
Our wrestling team continues to practice Monday and Wednesdays after
school at the Legacy Building beside Rotary Stadium. Stay tuned
for upcoming tournaments.
The grade 8 girls basketball team finished their season this past
week with a great team effort against Mission Secondary.
Unfortunately, they did not come out victorious, but their coaches were
extremely proud of their hard work and aggressive play. The
highlight for the season is that they received the league
“Sportsmanship” award, which is a huge honour as it accurately reflects
the girls’ positive attitudes on and off the court this season.
To be noticed by other teams in this way is a wonderful testament to
their character! Way to go girls!

SPRING SCHOOL DANCE
We will once again offer another spectacular school dance for our
students in the latter part of
the year. The Student Leadership Team has lined up a professional
group to come in on Friday,
June 2nd. We will take an afternoon to provide our students with the
option of participating.
This will be a formal dance (school dress code
applies). The dance will begin at 12:40 and run
until 2:20. Admission will be $1.00 or a can of food.
All proceeds will be donated to the local
food bank. The dance will have a Hawaiian theme. The same
DJ from the Christmas Dance will be providing the music and light show.
Church Parking
Gladwin Heights Church has asked that parents and guardians
no longer use the west entrance (i.e. off of Gladwin Road)
for their parking lot. Rather they have asked that vehicles
enter their parking lot on the north side off of Old Riverside
Road. We ask all those parents and guardians who pick up
their child from Gladwin Heights Church to assist us in cooperating
with this request.

Wolf Racing
Chief Dan pit crew and drivers did us proud on Friday with their
display of excellent sportsmanship, teamwork, and behaviour at the high
school time trials at the Mission Raceway. Arthur Plona did an
awesome job by posting some unbelievable reaction times. His first run
produced a reaction time of 0.007 seconds - that's 7 thousandths of a
second. He followed that performance with 0.215 and 0.077
reaction times. With the exception of one run, all our drivers
stayed under the one second mark.
As part of the tradition, a BBQ was set up at the track and the
students were treated to a great show put on by the Pro cars that were
there making passes in the Test and Tune portion of the day's events.

was outstanding and earned him a 1st place finish!
Congratulations to Spencer and his teachers for this wonderful outcome.
Congratulations
to Kiwanis Grade 8 Student of the Month for April - Kara F!
Kara was recommended by her teachers for being an outstanding academic,
a great citizen and a fabulous musician and artist. She has
represented the school in our extracurricular program as a swimmer,
volleyball player and track and field athlete.
School Track
and Field Meet
Our school will be holding its fifth annual school wide track and field
meet at Rotary Stadium during the day of Thursday, May 11th at Rotary
Stadium. In recent weeks our Physical Education program
has focussed on track and field and all students will have
the opportunity to participate in various events. The top
performers in each grade and gender will be invited to represent our
school at a district wide Track and Field Meet at Rotary Stadium on May
31st. Chief Dan George Middle is the reigning
Abbotsford/Mission middle school track and field champion.
LITERACY WEEK
Our Literacy Week April 10 -13 was a huge success! A different
Literary work was played over the PA each morning and each
afternoon. Students responded to the literary presentation either
through writing or through art. Some fabulous reflections were
generated by students. Throughout the week there was a book swap,
as well. Students brought books they had read and exchanged them
for books they had not read. All students who participated
entered their name for a draw and a large chocolate surprise for the
Easter long weekend was won by a lucky student. Continuing throughout
the week a quote from a book was read over the PA at each Nutrition
Break. Students put their answers in a draw box and at the end of
the day a winner was drawn from each grade (6, 7, and 8). These
students are now proud owners of some new books. Mr. Lilly also
brought in the Scholastic Book Fair which he set up in the library for
the entire week. Students and teachers were able to make
purchases of the new and latest books available. To conclude our
Literacy Week celebration the entire student body moved into the
gymnasium for the last 2 blocks of classes. Here we celebrated
both Literacy Week and French Day with an imovie, singing, flags, and a
concert put on by Danielle Desjardins, a singer/song writer from
Vancouver. Thank you to all staff, students, and guests who
through their participation made this week such a huge success!
Merci!
Athletic Banquet
Last year the school hosted a very successful year end athletic banquet
with over 200 athletes and parents attending. This year we have
identified Monday evening, June 19th for this second annual event. Once
again Mr. Lilly's Wolf Catering Club will provide a wonderful sit down
dinner for all who attend. Tickets will be available in the second week
of May. More information will follow in the next newsletter.
F.S.A.'s and
Grade 6 Write
Final preparations are beginning for students in Grade 7 to write
Foundations Skills Assessments in reading comprehension, writing and
numeracy in the middle of May. At this same time students in
Grade 6 will participate in a district sponsored writing assessment.
Grade 8
The teachers of Grade 8 students have made arrangements for two special
events to celebrate the ending of their students' middle school year
experience. In June, students will be invited to participate in a
morning hike and outdoor education experience in the Cultus Lake
area.. The actual date of this opportunity has not yet been
determined. On Monday evening, June 26th Mr. Lilly's Wolf
Catering Club will provide an evening sit down dinner and dance to
Grade 8 students. The evening program will also involve a year
end slide show. After the dinner students will be welcomed to stay for
a dance with a professional DJ. Dinner will begin at 6:00 pm and
the dance will wrap up at 9:30 pm. This is not meant to be
a formal graduation ceremony. We are strongly discouraging
parents from "going overboard" in terms of expenditures for clothing,
limousines and the like. Students are welcomed to dress up, but
the evening is meant to be a casual affair that provides an opportunity
for all the Grade 8's to enjoy a meal together with their teachers and
have some fun with a dance afterwards. The cost for each event
will be minimal with more information to follow from the teachers of
Grade 8 students.

our bus driver. Great trip everyone and thanks for all of your hard
