I have received several calls today from parents and staff experiencing high anxiety due to media reports of additional cases of SARS being identified in Abbotsford.
I have spoken today with Dr. Andrew Larder, Regional Health Officer, who has confirmed that there are 8 suspected cases of SARS in Abbotsford. The Fraser Valley Regional Health Authority has identified all contacts; those who are symtomatic have been quarantined, those asymtomatic are being monitored daily. At this time, there is no justification for schools to prevent children attending.
Dr. John Blatherwick, Chief Medical Health Officer, previously provided the following information:
- No school worker has been infected because of exposure in
a school setting;
- The best protection for individuals remains frequent hand washing
with soap and water;
- Parents should watch their children for a high temeprature preceding
any other cold or flu-like symptoms.
I am also attaching the information previously forwarded to you from the Fraser Health Authority, in a letter to parents dated March 31st. You may wish to provide this information to parents and staff again.

Viral Gastroenteritis (Stomach Flu) and Norwalk-Like Viruses
Schools in the Fraser Valley area are currently experiencing a number of incidences of 'stomach flu' symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea. Public Health is investigating the situation. At this time it is believed the cause of the illness is Norovirus (Norwalk-like Virus). We are asking for your cooperation in following the advice given to us by the Fraser Health Authority.
If your child (ren) have stomach flu-like symptoms, including vomiting and/or diarrhea, it is important that they DO NOT return to school until at least 2 full days (48 hours) after their symptoms have cleared. It is also recommended that they do not attend any group events such as birthday parties etc. until at least 48 hours after their symptoms have cleared.
We have attached important information about viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu) and Norwalk-like Viruses (Norovirus). Please read the attached information carefully.
We would like your help in encouraging your children to wash their hands thoroughly with warm water and soap after using the washroom and prior to eating. Public Health recommends single-use paper towels to dry hands with to prevent cross contamination from multiple-use cloth towels.
