ADMINISTRATOR'S MESSAGE

Welcome to a new school year at Ecole Intermédiaire Chief Dan George Middle School.  This is the fifth  year operating as a Middle School (i.e.  Grades 6, 7, and 8).   I am excited about the year ahead and look forward to working with and supporting the students and staff.

Chief Dan George Middle School is unique in that we offer four distinct programs for students.  These include a Resource Room, Early French Immersion, Late French Immersion and English Program tracks.   Although the school serves over 600 students, the Middle School philosophy allows for students to be part of smaller teams within each program and at each grade level.

The team approach to grouping allows each student to get to know two or three core subject teachers very well.  These teachers instruct in three or four preferred areas to provide a higher level of expertise in their delivery.  In addition, students will experience moving to various classrooms through the year to focus on four Exploration areas.  These include: Technology Education, Information and Communications Technology, Home Arts, and Band or Music.  The school also provides specialized rooms to instruct in the areas of Science, Arts and Media Technology.   The students  and staff are heavily supported by a trained group of teachers who make up our Learning Services Team.  The team provides additional assistance in the areas of Learning Assistance, E.S.L., counseling, behaviour management, gifted education, I.E.P. management and First Nations support.

The staff has worked with the School Planning Council to carry forward the following school goals:

  1. To maintain and/or improve reading comprehension in the language of instruction for English, Early French, Late French and French Immersion by June 25, 2006.
  2. To improve school climate and culture through implementation of middle school practices, specifically:

We, at Chief Dan George, believe that “Excellence in Achieved Together.”

Best wishes for a successful and exciting 2005-2006 year at the “Home of the Wolves”.

Sincerely,

Barry D. Dudzik

ROUTINES AND POLICY

1.
Attendance
Except for illness or unavoidable family concerns, all students should attend school every day. Absent students miss not only the lessons of the day but also the learning that takes place in group discussions where students begin to appreciate the different views and abilities of others. Learning that is lost due to absence cannot adequately be replaced!

2. Illness at School
When a student becomes ill at school, parents will be contacted to confirm that it is safe to send the child home. The medical room can be used with permission of a staff member. Students need to check in and out of the medical room at the office.
In any case of illness or injury, no student should go home on his/her own initiative but should seek help at the office.

Accidents and emergencies are to be referred to the office immediately.

3. Closed Campus
Chief Dan George Middle School has a closed campus policy. This means that only students who attend Chief Dan George Middle School are to be on the school grounds during the school day. It also means that once you arrive at school you remain on the school grounds for the remainder of the day.

4. Dress Code
Although the responsibility for personal dress and grooming rests primarily with students and their parents, clothing which is comfortable, clean and modest is conducive to a good educational climate.
The following points indicate our expectations of student attire at Chief Dan George Middle School:

5. Lates
Students who are late to class disrupt, annoy and consume the time of fellow classmates, teachers and the office staff. Please ensure your child arrives at school on time.

6. Student Valuables
Students are strongly discouraged from bringing valuables including walkmans, radios, expensive shoes and clothing articles to school. Valuable items are brought to school at the owner's risk; the school is not able to cover losses. The school administration will consequence any student who chooses to become involved in vandalism or theft of another person's belongings. However, all students are advised to be especially prudent with their personal property.

7. Skateboards, Roller Blades and Scooters
For safety reasons, skateboards, roller blades and scooters are not to be used on school property. These must be stored safely in the classroom or office.

8. Bicycles
Bicycles are to be parked and LOCKED in the bike racks on the east side of the school. Students are not permitted to be around the bike rack area during the school day.

9. Hall Behaviour
Hall behaviour and language should be on a high level, suitable to an institution of learning. No profanity or inappropriate touching of others. Play fighting is not allowed.

10. Lockers and Locks
All students will be issued a combination lock and a locker. Locks must be rented from the school for security reasons. Lock combinations are to be memorized and NOT shared with anyone. A $7.00 fee is charged to any student who loses their lock. A $2.00 fee is charged to those who need their lock replaced because they shared the combination with another student.

11. Textbooks

Textbooks and other educational resources are property of the school and school district. Students are issued textbooks at the start of the year. Students are responsible for returning the same textbook they are originally issued when they are collected or when teachers conduct their periodic "textbook check". Students will be charged for lost or damaged textbooks.

12. Homework
Homework shall be monitored by individual teachers as well as teams of teachers. Work done at home is an important part of all learning. It is an expectation of all students to have homework completed and all assignments handed in on time. If parents believe excessive amounts of homework are being done by their child, please contact your child's teacher. We will have a homework club available after school to assist students needing some extra support.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Visitors

All visitors are required to report to the office upon arrival to receive authorization for their presence in the school. Visitors on official business are welcome at our school. Those who arrive with no purpose are not welcome on school property. Please do not invite friends to visit you at school.

PARENTS DROPPING OFF LUNCHES, HOMEWORK, ETC. FOR THEIR CHILD ARE ASKED TO LEAVE IT AT THE OFFICE AND WE WILL PAGE YOUR CHILD DURING THE BREAK

Staff Room
The staff room is designed for the use of staff only. Students are reminded that teachers require a break as much as students. Noon hour supervisors and school administrators are available to assist students at break time.

Multi-Purpose Room, Gym and Library Options
We offer 3 areas of our school that will be open to students 45 minutes before school starts and 45 minutes after school ends. This should help students and parents when early drop-off or late pick-up are more convenient. In order to make this option available, we need cooperation from all and student adherence to the following: upon early arrival, students must select one of three option areas. They must choose between the MPR, Gym or Library. These "three areas" will be supervised by adults. Going to lockers, classrooms or in and out of the school is not allowed. The same procedure will be followed for after school.
