CHIEF DAN GEORGE MIDDLE SCHOOL
MUSIC DEPARTMENT

Band Evaluation

There are several components that make up a music course. To achieve a particular letter grade you must complete all the assignments required and meet the described standards. The following is a list of course requirements: (your teacher will notify you of any changes or additions)

1. Music and Technique Testing in Class 30%

You will be marked several times in each term during class time on sections from the pieces we are working on, and a variety of exercises according to grade level and ensemble. These tests will be worth approx. 10 marks each.

2. Theory 20%

There will be one to three theory tests per term that will cover any material we have discussed in class.

3. Performances 30%

Attendance at rehearsals and performances will make up a significant portion of your mark. CONCERTS AND PERFORMANCES are like term projects in a music program; therefore attendance is mandatory. Performances will be listed on the attached calendar. An excused absence must consist of a phone call or note from your parent/guardian before the performance. An unexcused absence must be followed by a note from your parent and a personal apology from yourself to your classmates on the following class or rehearsal. Failure to do this will result in an F for that term. It is the responsibility of the student to make prior arrangements for transportation. In the event of transportation problems, please talk to Mrs. Farley prior to the performance. Uniforms for concerts: White Band shirt handed out in Sept. and returned in June and Black pants or knee length or longer black skirt, black socks/nylons, black shoes.

4. Class Participation and Home Practice 20%

This will be assessed according to the teacher and self evaluations.

BAND STUDENTS CAN EXPECT:

1. To participate in at least three performances.
2. To learn a large number of musical selections in a variety of styles.
3. To be tested on your knowledge of the parts you play and on other general musical information that is presented in class.
4. To have available all the details of each method of evaluation in each course.
5. To be taught the correct method of playing your instrument -the voice included.
6. To be given equal teaching and encouragement as all other students, regardless of natural ability.
7. To be encouraged to participate in all school activities (both inside and outside the Music Department) and to be supported in making compromises where there are conflicts.

THE TEACHER WILL EXPECT:

1. Participation to the full extent of your ability with energy and enthusiasm

2. Attendance at all performances already scheduled and those agreed upon by your group.

3. Punctuality -be on time for class

4. Open-mindedness regarding musical styles

5. Willingness to try something new
